My Summary
About Me
Not currently looking for work sorry!
I am a play-worker with many years of childcare experience under my belt as well as a qualification in it (Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3). I have been a live-in nanny before for 3 young boys in Ireland and an ad-hoc nanny for various families across Glasgow and Edinburgh. I studied English and Scottish Literature, Creative Writing and Children's Literature (my passion) in Edinburgh University and the OU - I've led lots of children's workshops in arts and crafts, drama, storytelling as my day job was to look after children at an after school club, and during the summer holidays I tend to bring clowning groups to different festivals around the country.
I cannot drive but have had some successful lessons so could get a drivers licence if necessary - especially with financial aid to do so! I get around by bike at the moment - even if it's a long distance!
I'm trying to earn enough money to start my Masters in Play Therapy.
I love the outdoors, hiking, swimming and biking especially. I also love singing and reading. I also enjoy healthy eating and environmental conscientiousness (reducing my carbon footprint where possible).
I love animals and I'm a vegetarian but don't mind cooking meat for your family if you show me how. However, I am passionate about healthy eating in the home.
Most of all, I love to laugh and create a friendly environment.
I did very well at school and academically so am confident I'd be able to help your children with their homework despite language barriers.
I have experience working with children with additional support needs.
My official training certificates include:
Child Protection Awareness
Child and infant specialised First Aid,
Food Hygiene,
Good Practice in Infection Control,
Health and Safety,
Strategies to Support Children with Communication Difficulties,
Inclusive Play,
Autism Awareness,
Sign-a-Long (Sign language basics),
Managing challenging behaviour,
Consensus Decision making and facilitation training
Young People’s Mental Health First Aid.
Outdoor Play/Healthy lifestyles
Fire safety
Risky Play training
Bereavement Training
Outdoor curriculum
Drug and Alcohol awareness training (and trained in how to deliver this training to young adults)
If you'd like to see my CV I'd be happy to send it to you. It details more specifically my child-care experience as well as other related work: for instance, I had my own cleaning company for two years.
My Experience
Child welfare officer for Tiger Tea Kids who work at different festivals across the country during Summer, dealing with distressed children who have lost their parents.
Children's storyteller at Greenman Folk Festival and Kitchener's Primary School (Cardiff)
Volunteer for Hijinx theatre, a professional company for actors with learning disabilities. Hijinx gives them a platform to make and perform alongside actors who don’t have disabilities. On Tuesdays, I helped train actors with learning disabilities to perform at a professional level, at the heart of Hijinx’s mission, at Hijinx Academy - the only professional performance training in Wales for actors with learning disabilities. All day Wednesdays, I helped participants learn life skills through drama to build confidence and inter-personal skills.
Youth Vision volunteer: a charity that works with young people struggling with formal education, or excluded from school, and are not engaged in training, or employment. I offered a range of nature based informal education services (building fires, wicker weaving) to develop confidence and self-esteem to support a healthy transition to adulthood
Pollinate volunteer. Part of a small collective interested in sharing the joys of the seasons, growing and wild foods with young children. We aimed to teach basic growing skills as well as fruit and vegetables to eat and cook at school. Through these practical endeavours and energetic, hands-on workshops we explored wider social and environmental justice issues associated with food. I volunteered at Canal View Primary School, in a disadvantaged area in Edinburgh. I worked collaboratively with their P5 class (ages 9-10) to design an orchard and have facilitated weekly sessions with P3 classes doing a range of activities from planting seeds and making compost, to storytelling in the woods and making bread, to learning about the water-cycle.
Secretary and volunteer co-ordinator (later years: President and treasurer) for the Fair Trade Café where I volunteer making affordable soup every Monday to raise money for local charities (ongoing).
