About Me

I live in Glenarm with my husband, having recently moved here from Bedfordshire. I have three grown up children, and five grandchildren (aged 9,6,5,3 and 2). I am a retired teacher and former head teacher;
Not only do I have a full DBS enhanced clearance, I am also cleared by Ofsted to work with children and have Safeguarding qualifications and training.

I enjoy all craft activities especially quilting and patchwork.

My Experience

I qualified in 1995 and have taught in a variety of schools since then. In 2009 I became a Headteacher, before leaving mainstream education in 2012. Since then have focused on private tutoring and supporting other child practitioners. I have also worked with children who are considering 11+ and Common Entrance exams. My specialist subjects are English and Drama, although as a primary practitioner I have taught all curriculum subjects, and have also had articles published in professional journals. I have taught private students Maths, Science and English up to GCSE.

I have taught all age groups from Reception to Year 11 (4 - 16), as well as post 16 students with GCSE and Basic Maths and English skills.

Due to the current COVID situation I now operate solely as a virtual tutor, although I have invested significantly to ensure that I am able to continue to offer fully interactive one to one lessons.

I have worked with children who are not in main stream education either because of parental choice, ill health or exclusion and have a number of day time vacancies for parents who require this service. References are available from parents of my current students.

My daughter is very engaged with Denise's lessons as Denise makes it fun. I worried that my little girl might get distracted with online lessons but she concentrates really well, and during this lockdown period she has actually has so much more confidence during her normal online school after doing her session with Denise.

Highly recommended well worth the money

Denise has been really efficient and good to communicate with. One week in and she has been very helpful in re-organising and delivering our school’s homeschooling pack to our two Year 2 children. She has put in her own fun games and content to reinforce the learning and provide interest and a change of pace for the kids. She has an upbeat friendly manner but is firm enough to get the kids to listen and concentrate whilst distance learning from their living rooms.

Thank you so much for this review

We had a bit of a challenging situation with our 5 year old who'd had a bad experience at school. Denise built up a good rapport with him very quickly. Over the course of a week she did some great work with him which worked wonders on his confidence allowing us to unpick the situation and find a more suitable setting. The activities and materials were well thought out and great fun.

Thank you for your review

We approached Denise to tutor our two children.

Both children have very different personalities, but Denise bonded with both of them within weeks and a fantastic relationship has been created between both children and Denise.

Both children are always keen for their tutoring session and always comment on how much they enjoyed it.

Denise has been able to pinpoint the strengths and development needs of the children and brings tutorial work with her and leaves the children with task/activity to be completed by the next session.

We highly recommend Denise

Thank you so much for your review.

Denise has connected well with both of my girls! When DD1 was in year 3 she needed help with comprehension, Denise helped her with this and other concerns we had. In the last school year, she helped equip her to get through an entrance exam for a Bedford Girls.

She is now tutoring DD2, a completely different kettle of fish! With new changes to the school curriculum she has been key in DD2 learning and understanding.

Both of my girls are very fond of Denise and walk tall after a session with her. In fact they can't wait to show her pieces of work or homework she set them.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Denise!
