My Experience

From October 2016 to end of October 2017 I cared for two boys aged 4 & 7 years old. My duties included pick up from nursery/school & after school clubs, helping with household chores, cooking/planning kids meals, organising where to take youngest after nursery to widen his learning and social development ready to start school, helping with eldest son’s homework, organise days out in half-term/holidays, supporting mum with toilet training with youngest. Throughout the year I have had to learn a lot very quickly. I was challenged with something I had limited experience with before but have found it very rewarding. The youngest had just started school and the family no longer required my services from October 2017. I am now looking for a new challenge which can help develop my skills and experience further. In November 2017 I started an e-learning course though MNT Training and OCN (Open College Network). This was a level 3 Baby Care Course for nannies. I have done this alongside applying for full time/part time nannying positions. I have now completed my qualfication and achieved 90% and 3 credits and helped me develop my skills and knowledge when working with babies.

Previously I did babysitting for a family for 4 years. This role was not like a normal babysitting job where I would just sit infront of the tv when the children were in bed.The role involved making sure the children followed the usual bedtime routine, I read the youngest stories, which I found helped him fall asleep.
I would spend some of the evening when the youngest was asleep talking withe the older two children and helping with homework. On a few occasions when usual child minder was unable to collect youngest from school mum felt "completely confident" in me doing this. This required me to drive to the school make sure he had all his belongings, drive him home safely before getting him a snack and drink and ensured that all children were looked after till mum returned home from work.

I first found an interest in caring for children and helping with their development when I got the opportunity to volunteer in sixth form with pre prep swimming lessons. I found this very rewarding watching the children develop their swimming skills and become more confident in the water. This opportunity also required me to help with reading and structured playtime in the classroom.
