My Experience

I've been around children of all ages my entire life, thanks to my rather large family. Since a very young age, I'd be responsible for looking after my little cousins whilst their parents were working.
My first real experience of 'looking after' a child with autism was when I was around 7. (My mum, being the adult, was actually doing the responsible one.) The little boy was only 2 at this point and undiagnosed. He’s now 19 and has a gorgeous younger brother who has also been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. As I grew older, their parents would often ask me to babysit both of them for a few hours and I was viewed as the ‘big sister’ of the family. Almost 20 years later and the relationship continues to flourish!
2013 – A family friend requested that I assist their son with his maths, English and science homework as he had been struggling to keep up with his peers for some time. I soon noticed that he had difficulty focusing and that struggle would quickly turn to highly angry episodes. Whilst we did eventually manage to get the homework done, it proved to be incredibly consuming for both of us. It just so happened that around the same time, I had just started to learn about autism at college. After many contemplating how to bring this discussion up to his parents, I finally plucked the courage to have a sensitive conversation with them and around a year later, at which point I had started university, he was received his diagnosis. When I’d come back from university during the holidays, I’d continue to help him with his homework, comfort him regarding the serious bullying he was going through in school and reassure him that every child learns in different ways and at different paces and that it's okay to apply different techniques, as long as he understood what he was learning and eventually managed to complete it. I am still in contact with the family.

2015 – 2016 – During this time, I lived in Paris during my year abroad at university. I worked as a nanny for a professional French family with two young children. My duties consisted of preparing the children for school in the mornings (wake them up, prepare breakfast, assist them with washing up and getting dressed and drop them to school). Whilst they were at school, I’d do the general housework, empty the dishwasher, prepare dinner for the whole family and do any extra laundry. My main duty was to speak to the children in English whilst improving my French.
Between 2016 - 2017 - I had various child care roles in between my lectures in Southampton. These were mainly school pickups and ad hoc babysitting whilst the parents enjoyed some quality time.
Between 2017 - 2021 – I was hired as a second nanny to a professional Spanish family. The role consisted of providing care for two young children in Spanish from 7am – 6pm, 3 days a week. I’d wake the children up, prepare the eldest for nursey, drop him off and spend time with the youngest. Whilst I was at home with the youngest, I would focus on child development games and place a big emphasis on achieving their milestones.
