About Me

I have worked with people for many years, ageing from birth to the elderly. I am currently a professional nanny working in the Surrey area. I have a BA in Childcare and Education. I ran my own childcare business for over 25 years working directly as a childminder which I loved. I have supported people in the childcare profession (A childcare tutor and childcare assessor/support co-ordinator). I also worked as a staff manager of a local domiciliary care company and a wrap around care manager for an afterschool club, a nursery nurse, nanny, pre-school worker to name a few of my roles. I am a very caring person and really enjoy working in the community and in the home environment, my real passion is working with children. I am hardworking, reliable and will always put 100% into everything I do. I work well in a team and on my own using my own initiative. I’m a very good listener, very patient and have the ability to communicate well with people at all levels. I have been previously a private nanny for 2 years for a family in Woking. I'm am registered as an Ofsted nanny and have a current DBS. I have a driving licence, non smoker, first aid trained and have extensive knowledge of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), additional educational training and love to have fun and laughter with the children I care for. I am happy to do light housework if needed in my role. I have lots of experience with young babies as well as twins and all aged children, including children with additional requirements.

I have 3 children one of 29 years, one of 26 years and a 19 year old. I live in Woking with my partner Chris. 2 of my children are also nannies, so have gained my experience of caring for children. My mother was a childminder so I was bought up with lots of children around me, my sister and her husband are also childminders!

Hobbies

I enjoy listening to music, arts and crafts, watching films, cooking, seeing family and walking. I am also learning to play the guitar.

I love planning things for children and researching new ideas, activities and experiences for them to help them learn, achieve and have fun.

During my experiences with older children and adults, I have planned many activities and experiences indoors and outdoors. I have organised drop in childminding groups, networking support groups and activity days for children. During nannying we love the outdoors, going on bear hunts, making dens, going to playgrounds, the woods, walks and visiting places of interest and learning. Indoors lots of craft and role play, sensory experiences and play following the children's interests. I have lots of experience with babies from helping them develop, to weaning, sleeping and providing them with appropriate play experiences. I have been a mothers help and been in sole charge of the children I care for. I really love having a bond with the children in my care.

I lived in West Wales for 6 years and moved back to Surrey nearly 2 years ago for personal reasons. I loved living in the country and enjoyed the outdoor life, walking, sight-seeing and the joys of living by the coast. I love the countryside in Surrey too and know it well as I was born and bought up in Woking.

What I will bring to the job.

I have very good communication skills, I have worked with lots of parents, adults and children of all ages including professionals in the field. I would continue to do this to the best of my ability. I support parents to my best ability. Again helping children to learn and develop to their full potential, in a caring, fun, supported way.

I have office skills and have had to manage my own systems and organisation skills to carry out not only my own business (including my own accounts) and working for NCMA but also running a successful Network of childminders. As staff manager and wrap around care manager, I organised my own diary, planning ahead to make sure I complete all my tasks and supported all the staff on a regular basis. This has helped me in my nanny role to be efficient and plan ahead, to help the families in my care.

As manager in Wales of a wrap around care facility. I made many changes to create a free-flowing, child lead environment. Working with all the team, making sure the EYFS framework was being implemented correctly and made changes where necessary. I worked with the committee to ensure good communication, completed necessary paperwork and ensured the safety of the children and staff. Training was important, team meetings and communication essential. Again, I worked with many professionals, parents and the children. My passion is working with children themselves, this is why I love my nanny roles.

I believe I work very well with children, as parents and other people have commented on this, for example: “you are a natural with children and they love you, you can’t even think of working with anything else than with children, Jo” (A parent of a child I used to care for, that I still keep in contact with).

My Experience

1985 - When if left school I worked and trained to be a hairdresser for 3 years, this was with a YTS scheme. I worked during this time in a local hairdressers in my home town of Woking in Surrey.

1988- Then I went on to work in a large factory (James Walkers in Woking, Surrey. England) in the offices in the invoice department for 2 years, until I left to have my first child Jessica.

1990- Once I had my first child I became a nanny for 2 years in a private household which I loved. I cared for 2 children full time from 7am-7pm weekdays. I also trained to become a childminder during this time. My mother had been a childminder all her working life, so it felt very natural to me to work with children. My 2 sisters have also become childminders, my 2 daughters became childminders, now working nannies, so have a feeling it’s genetic!

I started childminding in 1992 and continued to work as a childminder until 2004. During this time I studied to complete all my qualifications including my Foundation Degree in early years. I cared for many children during this time, and became very established.

2004 – 2008 I worked as a Childminding Network and Development Co-ordinator for the National Childminding Association. Inspecting and advising childminders in the north east area of Hampshire a very large area. I also linked with the local Pre-school learning alliance, offering joint training to childminder's and pre-school staff.

This role was mainly out and about on the road all week, but consisted of 1 office day in the regional office in Basingstoke (where I was responsible for my own office needs and organisation) and to attend meetings and local conferences and support groups.

During this time I worked with lots of local professionals (including social workers and Ofsted) in the childcare field. I worked very closely with these professionals and parents to make sure all children’s needs were met, including working with looked after children on a community childcare scheme (which included children up to the age of 18 years) and children with additional needs. I also worked with foster and adoptive parents offering support and childcare advice.

I also ran several support groups myself to help childminders and their children get full use of the children’s centres in the local areas and worked very closely with the children centre staff. I also trained to teach adults during this time and trained newly registered childminders on the ICP childminding course. During this time I also ran a childminding course to a group of young people at the local Source Centre (Aldershot) in conjunction with NCMA the local council and the Centre, to enable them to further their careers into the childcare field. I completed my BA in Early Years Education during this time which I am very proud of.

After the 4 years I realised that I missed working with the children directly and went back to childminding part time which gradually increased to full time. I still continued to support other childminders during this time and got paid a bursary from the national childminding association for doing this work.

I continued to childmind from 2008 -2011, with my 2 daughters (my assistants). We ran a very busy practice with 15 children, me being the manager, until I moved to Wales. During this time we achieved an outstanding Ofsted Grade which we were very proud of. We were also members of the NCMA Network, a quality assurance scheme. Due to this we drew down the funding and could offer our 3 year olds 15 free hours of care and education and continued to care for children within the community childcare scheme. I then moved to Wales.

In August 2012- until November 2013, I joined a care company in Cardigan (as finding work with children was very hard in Wales as I didn't speak Welsh). I firstly worked as a carer to gain first hand experience then went on to be staff manager. My skills and qualifications from my previous jobs linked very well into my new job role. I look after around 70 members of staff, conducting appraisals, supervisions, support meetings and observations on staff. I also employed staff and worked with clients, social workers and physiotherapists. I attend multi-agency meetings, run staff meetings and taught the manual handling training sessions for staff. I oversaw the manual handling procedures with all staff and clients to make sure everything was in place. I also completed risk assessments on the client’s environment to keep staff and clients safe. My job involved lots of positive communication with staff, clients and their families. I had lots of positive feedback from clients and their families on the work I had been completing. I love to work with people!

November 2013 onwards -I then worked with my partner in his computer business. This includes retail sales and advising customers of service and repairs. We also sold guitars. I carried out invoicing and answered telephone enquiries. I have also helped with advertising the
