Mixedup Role: Youth Project Worker Address: EYST, St Helens road, Swansea
Responsibilities: I am a Youth Project Worker for Mixtup’s 11-18 Age group. Mixtup is a Youth club for young people of mixed abilities that meets from EYST. As part of my role as a Youth project worker I am expected to establish contact and build relationships. Bring Mixtups young people together in groups/ open events and shared activities, such as facilitating and planning our Youth Club and Chill and Chat sessions. Youth Club is a place where our young people of mixed abilities can come and truly be themselves. Our Chill and Chat sessions focus mostly on the concept of addressing our young people’s wellbeing. In previous sessions we have talked about such things as body positivity and how to be body positive, ran baking for better wellbeing sessions. Where we use baking as a form of therapeutic practice, as it allowed our young people to learn and develop new key life skills in a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment. Not only does baking and creating something instil in our young people a sense of achievement/accomplishment, but it is also a brilliant way to bring our young people together. To talk and bake and create something that they can all enjoy together. Often the things we bake reflect the topic at hand for example when we spoke about body positivity, we utilised baking as a means of creating a self-portrait. Our young people created mini versions of themselves in the form of short bread and we discussed as a group the way in which all our creations are different, just as we as individuals are different. And about how difference is something to be celebrated.
As a Youth Project worker, I enable participation of our young people in activity evaluation and review of activities. Address, advocate, and educate them about youth issues, influences, and interests. And their rights as young people of mixed abilities. I provide guidance (in locating self and growth opportunities), instruction (teaching & directing), personal & social education, mentoring and support and Collaborative development of community resources, facilities, and services. Through one to one meetings and check ins in alignment with our safeguarding rules and regulations. I plan and facilitate trips and workshops/events for our young people to experience through contacting and networking with partnering organisations.
