About Me

Hello! My name Is Eve! I am a Registered Paediatric Nurse. Currently, I work 3 x 12.5 day shifts a week in a paediatric hospice within Scotland as a RN including with complex needs.

Some skills include:

medication administration either orally or via gastrostomy/ NG/ Jej
Tube feeding
Suctioning
diabetes care I.e. insulin injections- BG checks- ketones- pump use
using a hoist safely I.e. moving and handling all up to date

I have had a PVG check and I have proof of the disclosure form. Additionally, I have proof of a completed moving and handling passport and I am trained in both adult and paediatric BLS ,ILS and CPR. Ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for a child to thrive is fundamental. I've been told being able to communicate and work with all age ranges (0-16) is one of my main strengths.

Sports and arts/ crafts are a great passion of mine. I feel involving children in sports from an early age is beneficial for building confidence, self-esteem and allowing a young person to express themselves. Most importantly sports are fun!

Arts and crafts can be fun while being mess free at the same time.

Each child has their own likes and dislikes and I work within this by ensuing a child is engaging in an activity they are passionate about and find fun to them! Trust takes time meaning a family centred approach is taken.

No child is the same, each child has their own needs and is unique in their own way. Being patient, kind, gentle and giving of your time is what I strive to achieve.

My Experience

Since October 2020 until present I have carried out 7 placements up to this point which included working in the Royal Hospital for Children in areas including children’s accident and emergency department, children’s neurology inpatient ward, children’s gastronomy inpatient ward (6 weeks each) and a children’s cardiology ward which lasted 5 weeks. Also just finished a 3 month placement in NICU. These placements have provided me with invaluable experience with including building a therapeutic relationship with both children and their families as well as being able to communication both verbally and non-verbally in order to positively engage with a child in a child- friendly environment. Working as part of a team is fundamental for creating a thriving environment.

Throughout my placements I have gained confidence such as in setting up NG feeds, passing nasal or oral gastric tubes, gastrostomy medication , suctioning, nebulisers including filtered and have experience with tracheostomy tape and tube changes, changing stoma bags, BG checks, being able to identify a true desaturation and dressings. Additionally I am aware of the importance of heating up feeds, being aware of allergies and the importance of an epipen. I am a type 1 diabetic and I have experience In areas such as hypo awareness, insulin injections and I am currently using an insulin pump.

In addition to my studies and placement I have had the fantastic opportunity to be the class representative for the child field the past 3 years which has provided me with more confidence and enhanced my leadership skills. This includes speaking up for the needs of my field and year group in order for each student to be able to succeed. Within the university I am a student ambassador meaning I work at open days for the child field, make myself available for questions and answers at applicant events. This year I was lucky enough to have workers at freshers week which was a great success even if it wasn’t the same as usual times prior to COVID.

Beforehand, in 2019 In my 6th year at school I had completed a level 6 in youthwork as well as completing my highers. Youthwork really gave an insight into what children and young people go through, their experiences and the reasoning behind certain situations. Within this, safeguarding of children was introduced too.

While in 5th year I completed an SCQF 5 introduction to nursing course. Through this I had learned basic first aid, focused on mental health as well as units such as prevention of infection.

From October 2018- February 2019 I had volunteered at a dementia unit and day care centre. This provided me with the chance to interact and communicate with these individuals in a holistic way.

Additionally, I had carried out my work experience in Isobel mair nursery school. This taught me about how to focus on the needs of a child and how every child’s needs are different.

Lastly from 2015-2017 I had volunteered at a Saturday sports camp for children aged 4-12. This was a great way to work with children and young people in a less formal setting. From this I gained a 200-hour saltire award.
