About Me

My name is Louise Carr and I’m an art tutor and community artist. I am passionate about inclusion, equality and social justice and have a vast amount of experience working with children and young people from the community.

Working with the community is something I strive to always be incorporated into my artistic practice. I believe where it is possible and when we are in a privileged position, we have a duty to give people, especially those who face barriers a voice and to empower them.

Society is not always fair therefore we must equip ourselves with the right knowledge and skills to support people and help them reach their full potential. I strive to keep a non-judgmental, person-centred approach while working with others, I listen to them when they speak, encourage them to use their voice and not be afraid of their emotions or opinions. I work in a way that promotes diversity and respect and ensure the rights of each child is being met. I believe art can play a role in giving people a voice, a release and empower them.

I am offering art sessions for children and young people where they can make their own masterpieces in a safe and nurturing environment. They will be encouraged to express themselves freely in mediums of their choice. This could include drawing, painting, print making, illustration, pottery and textiles. They will learn new skills, be invited to push boundaries and think outside the box. The focus will be to make sure each participant is having fun which will lead them to grow more confident and develop self-worth.

From art, kids gain a range of skills, including creativity, fine motor skills, problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and emotional expression. Art also enhances their ability to focus, observe, and appreciate different perspectives. It boosts their brain power. Getting creative also significantly reduces cortisol, the main stress chemical in our bodies.

Art can help develop language skills, comprehension skills, and make a child more literate. Art is key to their development.

It's not therapy. It's fun, creating, freewheeling, playing, experimenting in the hope that children actualise their potential and help them flourish.

My Experience

I have worked with a diverse range of ‘outsiders’, people society judge and dismiss. They live with mental health conditions, social isolation, physical disabilities, complex special needs and gender complexities. Using Art as an engagement tool I have taught in both Primary and Secondary Schools and delivered projects within different care providers.

I regularly freelance with an Arts Charity where we provide a safe space for children and young people to make art and express themselves freely.
