I have been involved in childcare in one form or another since 1986. I was a Day Carer working for City of Edinburgh Social Work Department offering childcare to families who required additional support whilst I lived in Edinburgh and only stopped this when we moved to South Queensferry due to the lack of client families in this area. I then registered as a Self Employed Childminder. My husband and I were also Foster Parents having a child residing with us for two years who was successfully adopted at the end of his placement with us. I have two grown up children of my own - both of whom now have their own children.
My setting offers 1140hrs funded childcare for eligible 2,3 and 4 year old children - working in partnership with Edinburgh City Council.
In my setting I have created a loving, safe, stimulating, smoke-free, home from home environment and by working in partnership with parents I provide all children in my care a clean, loving and home-like environment where everyone feels valued.
I encourage positive attitudes to self and others - developing each child’s individuality, confidence and self-esteem. I encourage the emotional, social, physical, creative and intellectual development and well being of the children in my care through play, using a fun and friendly approach to early learning thus enabling each child to reach their full potential. I encourage children to explore the world by providing opportunities to stimulate interest and imagination. I work hard to encourage the emotional, social, physical, creative and intellectual development of the children through play. I nurture positive behavior in the children by setting a good example myself - showing kindness, helpfulness, tolerance and good manners at all times.
I work closely in partnership with parents by fully involving them in their child’s care, sharing information, encouraging and listening to their suggestions allowing me to support them and tailor my service to ensure the wellbeing of their child. I provide healthy snack taking parent’s wishes into account whilst adhering to The Setting the Table guidelines. I extend the children’s ability to communicate ideas and feelings in a variety of ways including asking them for their daily input into activities and the resources they wish to use. Children and their parents are also issued with evaluation forms in which I ask them to complete these honestly to allow me to improve my setting.
I promote a positive image of childcare by working in partnership with parents and the wider community including our local nurseries. We as a setting are actively involved in our local childminders group, toddler groups and our allotment at Craigie’s Farm. I encourage children to explore the world by providing opportunities to stimulate interest and imagination. The children thrive on our use of local outdoor facilities such as parks, beaches and frequent visits into the village, West Lothian, Fife and Edinburgh
