Our Summary
About Us
Hi, we are Phillippa and Becky, the owners of the house that Jack built nursery, and we would like to say a big welcome to our page.
Our nursery is based in Garston, Watford, in the grounds of the Building Research Establishment- just a couple of minutes from the M1 and M25.
We are in an old stable block- a safe space for the little ones, with plenty of character.
With a combined 34 years experience in childcare, we bought our nursery in 2018.
Our main aim is to support and encourage children to reach their full individual potential, in a fun, stimulating and safe environment.
We work closely in partnership with parents and we have an open door policy so if a parent/ carer has any questions we will always answer them.
As managers we always aim to have a fun, safe environment for our staff. We recruit staff members who are dedicated to childcare and we promote individual development by supporting them to do courses.
Our three playrooms are-
The little Dreamers- where the babies are aged from 6 months to 2 years of age.
The Little Makers- Where the children are aged from 2-3 years of age.
The Little Storytellers- where the children are aged from 3-5 years of age.
We chose the names as we say you can have a dream, make it come true and then tell a story.
We currently have limited availability. If you would like more details please send us an email
The nursery is open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm 51 weeks per year. We are closed for a week at Christmas and bank holidays.

My son attends The house that Jack built nursery, and I have to say that myself and my wife, along with our son absolutely love it!
We’re made to feel so welcome here, I can’t imagine loving another nursery in the way we do with this place! The staff are so friendly, welcoming, loving and caring. The management are really involved in the day to day events in the nursery, they’re always around, and really hands on - it makes a big difference! You can tell everyone who works here really cares. It’s wonderful to see, and I feel so relaxed sending my son here - knowing that he’s being cared for how I would care for him at home.
We get sent a weekly menu, it’s always so varied and full of really nutritious and fun foods - all freshly prepared on site! We receive regular updates via the app - photos of what our son has been up to at nursery, it’s so wonderful to see a glimpse of what he’s up to! The activities that the staff come up with are really inventive and fun, I really enjoying seeing little update photos on facebook of all the fun activities the kids have been up to!
The nursery itself is also a really wonderful environment to be in! It’s always very clean and has a homely welcoming atmosphere. It’s got great gardens and outside spaces for all the kids to enjoy, too - as well as being located on fantastic grounds which the children get to take advantage of as they're often taken on walks around the site!
During the pandemic the nursery went above and beyond to help us out - and they’ve had minimal cases, which I truly believe is down to their bubble implementation, and their strict cleaning routine. They’ve taken a cautious and appropriate response and as a result have managed to keep us all safe. I feel confident sending my son here knowing he’s well protected.
Overall I can’t recommend this nursery enough, I’m so glad that we chose to send our son here, it feels like we’re part of the family and it’s a big relief to have found somewhere like this. ❤️
My daughter has attended this nursery for 3 years now and has really enjoyed her time. She was so excited to go back after lockdown and on her second day back told me she was having "too much fun" at nursery. The nursery have put in place a number of extra measures to ensure the safety of the children including allocated drop off and pick up times, keeping the children in bubbles and extra cleaning. All of these measures have made me feel completely comfortable about my daughter returning.
The activities the children take part in are always well thought out and have really helped with the development of the skills my daughter will need when she starts school in September. She has particularly enjoyed the additional activities the nursery organise like phonics and music classes.
This nursery is smaller than a lot of the others I looked at which I think is a real advantage. The children all get to know each other well and form a real bond with the staff.

I had chosen The House That Jack Built Nursery after visiting 12 nurseries, some of them more than once. It is funtastic, welcoming and inspiring place, reflecting the personality of people who established this venture. Nowhere else I felt so comfortable, it was the only place I had no reservations. I felt I could enjoy myself to spend the entire days there, Monday to Friday, therefore I trust this is the right environment for my child. It is rather small which gives that homely feeling, less institutionalised as opposed to other larger nurseries. Full of great toys, accessories and activities, allowing children to have cheerful playtime, education and development through play. And yet, extremely bright and tidy, well organised with huge attention to detail. Lets not forget the fresh and nutritious food, cooked on site by lovely chef, and safe and peaceful location, with lots of green space around.
I imagine that many parents are nervous about the idea of their children starting or returning to nursery or school. I wasn't entirely sure either, what the right thing to do is. I was worried if it means unnecessarily increased risk of catching the virus, I was afraid of being judged as bad, careless parent etc. But as lovely as it was to spend so much time together, I strongly believe that children require contact with their peers for all-round, well-balanced development. It has been few weeks since my daughter got back and I am assured it was right decision. My daughter is loving being back and I am confident that the nursery is a safe space for her. They have been brilliant at keeping us updated with their safety measures and adopted a number of changes to keep everyone safe without feeling uncomfortable. It has been really reassuring for us during what is still much an uncertain time.
Our son has been at the House that Jack Built Nursery for nearly two years, During that time he has received exceptional care and nurturing from all the staff. He has thrived in the homely setting and we have been really pleased with his progress. The staff have been really supportive working with us through each stage of his development. Communication between the staff and parents is thorough and frequent, such that we feel well informed about our son's achievements and developmental progress. We couldn't have hoped for a better start for our child.
