We are looking for a nanny who can take care of our 5-year old son during the week until we have found a new school for him. He is a lovely and bubbly boy but can get impulsive and overly angry (both verbally and physically) when overwhelmed. His old school suspects he might have autism and we are currently trying to get an assessment.
As such, the nanny would need to be experienced and patient and be willing to help our son further develop his emotion regulation skills. Whereas he responds well to boundaries and routine, traditional discipline strategies (time out, punishment, reward chart) do not really work with him. He responds well to reasoning and compromises instead. He does not want to be angry or aggressive and feels very sorry after his meltdowns when he realises what had happened. We try to communicate that being angry is ok but that we need to find different ways to express his anger.
We would provide the nanny with all the information necessary regarding what works well with him and what doesn’t, how to avoid certain triggers and how to “read” his behaviour. Whereas we would be looking for a full-time nanny, we acknowledge that both our son as well as the nanny will need some time to get used to and trust each other. Of course, we are also always open to suggestions regarding strategies and happy to try out new techniques to help our son develop.
After we have found a suitable school, we would also be potentially looking at wrap-around care.
Please get in touch if you would be interested in finding out more.
