Passionate about teaching but unreasonable & rude

Reviewed

I’ve described my experience below; using factual evidence (i.e. from emails/texts/WhatsApps) should it be denied or disputed.

The trial lesson went well, she was passionate about teaching and I was keen to proceed.

My profile/advert/message had said that I was looking for a tutor for Tuesday and Friday evenings although alternative times could be discussed. Based on her availability, we agreed on Tuesdays and Saturdays. She offered to discount her fees, I took her up on her offer and suggested 20%, and she agreed.

Her Ts&Cs said lessons were to be paid for a minimum of 24 hours in advance. I said I wasn’t OK with the advanced payment and could pay immediately after each lesson by online transfer and she agreed. Her Ts&Cs also said that cancelled/missed sessions are non-refundable. Her Ts&Cs also said that she had a grace period of 15 minutes, that if the student did not show up after 15 minutes then it would count as a missed session and would be charged in full and no refund would be offered.

I said I was ready to commit to the discussed hours until further notice and had no intention of cancelling any lessons; that I never did with our previous tutor whom we worked with for 15 months. I said that however, life happens and her terms needed to accommodate situations where the client had no choice but to cancel a lesson. I said I could agree to the following “Each party agrees to give the other party 30 days' notice of the cancellation of a lesson. The parties shall collaborate to reschedule the lesson for a date and time that is suitable for both parties. In the event that a suitable date and time is not agreed upon, the lesson shall be deemed as permanently cancelled and will not be charged for. Should the student be late for a lesson, the lesson shall proceed from the time that the student is available to join. The tutor shall not be obliged to extend the lesson to make up for the lost time.”

Her reply? “If you cannot agree to my terms as they are, then you are more than welcome to find another tutor. I have already lowered my weekly pricing significantly and made amendments to my schedule to accommodate your needs. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.”

To date, not one of my other clients, nor prospective client has had a single problem with my t&cs.  These are industry standard. You are the first. You have clearly had an issue with these and I was not, in this instance, able to accommodate your dislike of them.  As a result, you did not take up my services. End of.
Your one star rating reflects your problem with the industry standard t&c's, not my teaching abilities.
Also, I do not appreciate you copying and pasting the contents of our private and confidential emails - I find this highly unprofessional (contravening GDPR
