About Us

Backworth Park Primary School is currently situated in its own leafy grounds, set off Station Road in Backworth Village next to the Miners Welfare and Golf Club. Initially built in 1967 as a First School, our premises were refurbished and extended and we become a Primary School in 2000. We currently have 136 pupils, aged between 3 and 11 years of age. In September 2018, our school will re-locate to purpose built and bigger premises close to the Northumberland Park area; this will be a very exciting development for our families, staff and Governors. Our Nursery class will continue to run for up to 26 pupils per session, but Reception to Year 6 pupil numbers will increase to 45 pupils from September 2017 in preparation for the move to the new and bigger premises. The new building will have the capacity to expand further to 60 pupils in each of these main school year groups.

Our Childcare Provision

Currently the school offers Breakfast Club from 8.15am for pupils in the main school. From January 2016, this became a paid provision, costing £1 per day. Governors review the costs at least annually. The Club is staffed by 2 Breakfast Club Assistants and overseen by the Headteacher. Approximately 33 children are registered, but not all attend every day, with parents selecting the number of days they wish. Children are offered a choice of cereals, fruit juice, milk or water to drink, and can also have toast.

Whilst there is not currently sufficient demand or interest in After-School Child Care provision, the Governors are aware that this is something to be exploring when numbers increase in future years. Such provision would most likely be run by an external provider and be a chargeable service to parents. The same provider may also become responsible for expanding our Breakfast Club provision. After School Clubs currently run for certain year groups, depending on availability of school staff to lead these. These sessions are generally free for pupils to attend.
