About Us

We are a small, semi-rural school set in the heart of Barton village. Our school boasts smaller than average class sizes, excellent resources and a large playing field. We pride ourselves in knowing our children well and visitors often comment on the family atmosphere and sense of security within school. I have been headteacher of the school since 2007, first as Mrs Bolton and more recently as Mrs Goodwin.

Our children are taught in bright, airy, well-resourced classrooms. Our small class sizes mean that we know our children as individuals and are able to provide additional support or extend learning as appropriate, allowing each child to achieve to the very best of their abilities. We promote high expectations of behaviour and believe that each child should be given every opportunity of personal success, be it sport, art, music or the more academic subjects. With this in mind we offer a wide range of extra curricular activities including netball, football, dance, table tennis, computer, music and craft. We take part in a wide range of sporting events and recently participated in the Lancashire Schools Dance Festival at the Guild Hall in Preston.

Our modern building is well-maintained and the outdoor area has recently been developed so that children have a large choice of play equipment, a ball game area, a garden area and trim trail. Each class has its own garden and children enjoy planting and caring for seedlings, the produce of which is offered to the church during harvest.

Our links with St Lawrence Church are strong. The vicar leads collective worship in school once a week and the children regularly participate in church services both in school time and on Sundays.

The school has been awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark, which recognises good teaching in Maths and English; the National Healthy Schools Mark, the School Achievement Mark and numerous Learning Excellence Awards.

Our Childcare Provision

The school and nursery offers additional care if required from 7.30am - 9.00am or after school from 3.30pm - 5.30pm Monday - Friday in term time. Early Bird Club operates from 7.30am each school day; for a small fee to cover costs, children are given a choice of breakfast from cereal bars, cereal, yoghurt, toast and fruit juice. They are then able to chat, socialise and play before the start of school. Stay and Play runs until 5.30pm and offers a light tea and structured activities. Staff employed in the Early Bird and Stay and Play Clubs are also employed as teaching assistants in school or nursery, giving continuity at either end of the school day. Further details are available from the school office.
