St Chad's Church in Wales Voluntary Aided Primary School is a welsh establishment school in Hanmer.

About Us

Welcome to St. Chad’s School, Hanmer.
Children have been educated on this site for over 300 years. The school was built in 1676 when Charles II was King. The land for the school was obtained by Sir Thomas Hanmer from Mr. Humphrey Alderson, a London dyer. It cost £71 to build and one of the first trustees was Luke Lloyd, whose tomb is one of the earliest in the churchyard.
By 1800 the building was in a very bad state of repair. An inspector reported: “The building was damp and badly drained, the furniture was rotting and everywhere was dirty. I could not find a decent place to lay my papers.”
Repairs were carried out in 1850 and a tablet commemorates this on the east wall. A girls’ school, the present Early Years Unit was built in 1871. The present hall was the boys’ school and this was also enlarged in 1894 to include the Practical Area. In January 2002, a major remodelling and extension programme was completed. The school now has two new classrooms, dry and wet practical areas and a purpose built Early Foundation Phase classroom which also houses the Playgroup in the afternoon.
During recent years the number on role has increased to 77. The staff and governors are proud of the children’s achievements and the Sociable and considerate attitude around the school. We are confident that your child will be happy at our school and that they will begin their educational journey in a caring and nurturing environment.
