My Summary
About Me
My name is Lizzie and I am a half Dutch half Scottish youth worker living in Edinburgh. I grew up in Aberdeen and moved to Edinburgh for University where I studied Social Sciences. After I graduated, I caught the travelling bug and have so far ticked off 50 countries. I’ve worked in Vietnam and South Africa and even volunteered with midwives in Sri Lanka. Throughout my travels, I have also enjoyed working and supporting young people and in more recent years have become passionate about advocating for mental health support.
My Experience
My first job at age 14 was as a Learn To Swim teaching assistant. This required me to be in the water with the children who were just starting their swimming journey. I was able to support lots of children at the same time as well as handle any signs of distress or upset within the class.
In my early twenties, I worked/volunteered with children in different capacities. In Vietnam, I taught EFL in a language centre for nearly a year. I mainly taught kindergarten and early years which required a lot of energy, planning and creative input. I have also worked with more vulnerable children when volunteering in Lebanon. I taught English to refugees as well as Awareness sessions on topics like stranger danger, sexual abuse and violence in the home.
I spent 3 months in Ghana in a childcare role where I supported the children with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking and eating, nursery, play and weekend excursions. I also monitored the children's health and took trips to the doctors or hospital when required.
For the last 2 years I have been providing child care to a local edinburgh family who have two children, one aged 5 and one aged 7. At first full-time but now on an ad-hoc basis as the kids are now old enough for afterschool club. I did many school pick ups, took them to after school activities like football and dance class and have done many overnights. This involves making meals, bath time, story time, breakfast and walking to school in the morning.
In my current role, I support teens and young adults who are struggling with their mental health. I have completed comprehensive Trauma-Informed training as well as Safe Guard and Child Protection training. My job requires me to build connections with young people through empathy, compassion and understanding and I find this work extremely rewarding.
My Qualifications
BA in Social Science from the University of Napier
TESOL certified (150 hours) Australian International College of Language
My Availability
I am currently on still working full-time in my role as a support worker for a homelessness charity. I am however looking to leave my job and work full time child care
