About Me
Personal Assistant / Support Worker for a Young Adult with Autism and Learning Disabilities
We are looking for a caring, reliable and experienced Personal Assistant (PA) to support our 18-year-old son.
Our son is a happy, affectionate and engaging young man with autism and learning disabilities. He has a wonderful sense of humour, loves to smile and sing, enjoys being outdoors, likes cooking and baking, and responds well to people who are calm, kind and enjoy interacting with him. He is verbal but benefits from support to develop and use functional language, communication skills and independence.
We live in East Hunsbury, Northampton, where he lives at home with his mum, dad and two brothers (aged 16 and 12) in a warm and supportive family environment.
About the role
This is a wrap-around care role supporting him before and after his attendance at CANTO Day Service.
Working hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday:
6:00 am – 9:00 am
3:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Wednesday:
Morning support as above, with afternoon hours adjusted to his half-day attendance at CANTO.
This averages approximately 40 hours per week
This role averages around 40 hours per week, but we are happy to negotiate fewer hours for the right person. The position may be ideal for someone who already has a daytime role while our son is at CANTO and is looking for additional work before and after the day service. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
Start date: As soon as possible.
Duties include
Supporting our son with his daily routine while encouraging independence and self-help skills, including:
Morning personal care, including bathing, dressing and hygiene.
Preparing and supporting breakfast and other meals.
Taking him to and collecting him from CANTO Day Service.
Supporting with toileting and personal hygiene.
Encouraging communication and functional language.
Developing independence through structured daily activities.
Playing simple turn-taking games, counting activities and other learning opportunities.
Supporting enjoyable activities such as walks, outdoor activities, cooking and baking.
Providing calm, consistent and engaging companionship.
Maintaining a tidy and organised environment while supporting his daily routine.
The person we are looking for
The ideal candidate will be:
Experienced in supporting young adults with autism and/or learning disabilities.
Calm, patient, kind and compassionate.
Reliable, dependable and punctual.
Flexible and able to adapt to changing needs.
Able to encourage independence while providing appropriate support.
Neat, organised and professional.
A confident driver with a full UK driving licence and access to their own car.
In possession of an enhanced DBS check (or willing to obtain one).
