My Summary
About Me
My Name is Rachel. I live in Lawley Village with my husband Oliver, our three children and our Labrador, Basil. I have been childminding since April 2016 and hold several qualifications including an Early Years foundation degree and level 2/3 awards in Understanding Autism, Supporting Dyslexia, Children and Young People’s Mental Health, Speech and Language Support and Forest School Leadership. I have also undertaken extensive training in areas including paediatric and outdoor first aid, food hygiene and allergy awareness, child protection, safeguarding and delivering the EYFS. I remain committed to my professional development and am currently in the final year of a BA in special educational needs and disabilities.
I offer a friendly and welcoming home-from-home environment from our house in the Woodland View area of Lawley, where the children have use of the following spaces:
• The lounge; a large room with access to the garden and plenty of space to play. The resources and equipment in here are changed frequently to sustain and follow the children’s interests and to suit our current “topics”. Recently we have been learning about owls and their prey, dinosaurs and fossils, and autumn. The lounge is also home to our small world and role-playing toys as well as resources for babies and younger toddlers. Most of our resources are kept at child height to enable self-selection, with just a few out of reach to encourage early communication by having to ask (with words or gestures) for them.
• The art room; home to our creative and open-ended resources. The art room is filled with wonderful arts and crafts materials, mark making opportunities and sensory treasures for our younger friends. There are desks to work at, easels for painting and drawing and floor space to get creative with pinecones, peg dolls, log slices and all the other open-ended materials available to use. The art room also offers opportunities for rest, sleep or quiet relaxation when needed.
• The kitchen-diner; great for baking activities as well as mealtimes, with room for everybody around the table. Children are actively involved in preparing their own meals and snacks and have plenty of opportunities to learn about where food comes from and making healthy choices whilst experiencing a wide range of foods.
• The garden; we have a reasonably sized (by new build standards) contained garden with adjoining driveway area which is great for children to use ride-on toys and learn how to pedal. The garden is home to our ginormous mud kitchen, climbing dome, play house, water run, digging patch and fantastic open-ended play materials. It currently also houses a family of frogs who like to surprise us when we reach into the mud kitchen to get a pot or pan!
• Other outdoor space; there is a large park with a playground, ball games court and cycle track located at the top of the road. We also make frequent use of the nearby community garden where we engage in forest school activities and learn about nature, the seasons and how things grow.
• We currently have one pet, a Chocolate Labrador named Basil. Basil is now 5 years old and has been part of our family since he was a puppy. He is very used to being surrounded by small children and loves the attention they give him. Naturally, he is never left unsupervised with the children and happily spends most of his day asleep in his bed.
My Experience
In addition to my 6+ years’ experience as a childminder, and as being a parent to three children, I co-founded and helped run the playgroup Lawley Ladybirds.
