My Summary
About Me
Hello, I'm Laura, a qualified primary school teacher based in Winchester with a specialist Early Years background and over 10 years’ experience working with children in both educational and family settings. I am passionate about helping children develop confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning through fun, engaging and personalised learning experiences.
I offer in-person tutoring (location dependent), small group sessions and online tutoring.
KS1 Tutoring (Reception–Year 2)
As a former Reception teacher, Year 1 teacher and Read Write Inc. Phonics Lead, I specialise in helping children build strong foundations in English, reading and Maths, including:
• Phonics
• Early reading
• Reading comprehension
• Vocabulary development
• Writing confidence
• Handwriting
• Spelling
• Year 1 Phonics Screening Check preparation
• Early maths and number skills
• KS1 Maths
School Readiness (Ages 2–5)
Helping children develop the confidence and skills needed for a happy, successful start to school through:
• Early phonics and pre-reading skills
• Early maths and number sense
• Communication and language
• Fine motor skills and handwriting readiness
• Listening and attention
• Social skills and emotional confidence
• Independence and classroom routines
11+ English – Building Strong Foundations
I also offer 11+ English support, particularly for children who would benefit from strengthening their foundational literacy skills. My approach is personalised and focused on building strong foundations; rather than focusing solely on exam technique, I identify gaps in the core skills that underpin successful 11+ English and work systematically to build confidence and understanding across:
• Reading comprehension
• Vocabulary development
• Spelling and grammar
• Creative writing
• Verbal reasoning skills
My teaching is warm, nurturing and tailored to each individual. Whether supporting a child with their first sounds, preparing them for school, building confidence in KS1 or strengthening their English foundations for future academic challenges, my aim is always the same: to make learning enjoyable while helping every child achieve their full potential.
Alongside tutoring, I am also available for occasional babysitting, ad hoc childcare and holiday childcare. With my background as both a qualified teacher and experienced nanny, families can feel confident their children are in safe, caring and experienced hands.
Above all, I genuinely love spending time with children and feel incredibly lucky to have built my career around supporting their learning and development. I would love the opportunity to support your child's learning journey.
My Experience
My career has always centred around children's learning and development. I graduated from the University of Bath with a First-Class BA (Hons) Degree in Education with Psychology before completing my PGCE (3–7 route with Early Years Specialism) at Bath Spa University.
I began my teaching career as a Reception teacher in Merton, London, where I taught for three years. During this time, I developed a particular passion and expertise in Phonics, early reading and early maths, and became the school's Read Write Inc. Phonics Lead. I have supported children through whole-class teaching, targeted interventions and personalised 1:1 support, helping them develop strong foundations in reading, writing and Maths. I have also successfully prepared children for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check with strong outcomes.
Following my teaching career in London, I spent three years working as a nanny for families in South Kensington and Chelsea, caring for children aged 2–8. Working as both a sole charge and shared-care nanny gave me invaluable insight into children's development beyond the classroom. I supported homework, reading, school readiness, daily routines, travel and overnight care, becoming a trusted part of family life. Many of the children I cared for attended leading London prep schools, giving me valuable insight into the expectations of independent education.
More recently, I taught at an independent prep school in Bristol, where I taught both Year 4 and Year 1, delivering the full curriculum (excluding specialist subjects). Alongside whole-class teaching, I have extensive experience planning and delivering targeted 1:1 and small group interventions in Phonics, reading and Maths.
