Welcome to Little Acorns, Gresham, UK. My name is Helen Evans, and I am an Ofsted registered child minder.
Little Acorns is a childminding setting based in the lovely English countryside where the emphasis is on playing and learning outdoors.
At Little Acorns Childminding, I place a strong emphasis on outdoor learning because I believe children thrive when they can explore, discover, and learn in the natural world. Outdoor experiences encourage curiosity, creativity, and confidence as children investigate nature, take safe risks, and develop their physical skills through active play.
Whether we’re exploring local parks, observing seasonal changes, planting and growing, or enjoying sensory activities in the fresh air, I use the outdoors as an extension of the "learning environment". Outdoor learning also supports children’s wellbeing, communication, problem-solving skills, and understanding of the world around them—while ensuring they have plenty of fun along the way!
We have a National Trust pass that not only allows us access to the rich natural environments of Sheringham Park, Felbrigg Estate, Blickling and the Roman Camp, but also allows us to visit the beautiful gardens at Felbrigg Hall and the Stately houses themselves throughout the year, but especially at Christmas.
Our garden is full of wildlife, we easily find insects, spiders, beetles, bugs, frogs, birds, to name just a few. We regularly spot birds of prey circling over head, and we have many visitors to our garden in the form of pheasants, chickens and on a few occasions, deer.
A short walk away is a nice park where we can take a picnic and let off some steam.
Nearby towns of Sheringham and Holt provide wonderful play and friend-making opportunities with their various toddler groups, the library and soft play.
Aside from all the wonderful opportunities to learn and understand about nature, we also have a selection of outdoor toys; not one, but THREE mud kitchens and all the kit your little one needs to make the best mud pie ever! We've got a big slide, and a little slide, a sandpit, a raised bed full of spring flowers and herbs, a cute little wooden house where your little one can play all sorts of imagninitve play, an old microwave to heat up the "soup" your little one has been mixing up, a picnic bench for outdoor picnics and crafts, a tuff tray for themed activities, and we've even got a transport area where your little one can transport bark and sand with our little diggers and movers. We've even got two very long gutters that your little one will enjoy pouring water down on a warm day.
Cold wet days are also well catered for inside with our very own "book nook" where your little one can grab a book and a teddy and settle down with blankets and cushion and have a little chill! We are proudly a "screen free" setting and this means we don't have the TV on but we do use our Alexa speaker to play our favourite songs! We've got a doll's house, push along toys, dolls + accessories, books + props, a fisher price garage, a work bench, a kitchen, and so much more as well as lots of crafts supplies and oodles of resources to help your little one learn their shapes, colours, numbers etc!
Settling in sessions are available at my usual rate per hour to ensure a smooth transition on day one. I close for 5 or 6 weeks for family holidays per year and plenty of notice is given so you can plan accordingly. All invoices are issued monthly, in advance and I operate a "no pay, no play" policy.
I don't work with an assistant but we do have the company of three cats, Whiskers (15) Sox (7) and Pickle (7) who really like to keep an eye on the little ones, especially if the weather is bad! I live here with my family; husband Alex, and sons Jack (23) and Harry (18) but your little one may not see much of them as they are out at work during office hours. Everyone in my household has an up to date DBS which has been processed by Ofsted.
My Experience
I have plenty of experience as I was a parent helper in nursery/playschool and reception classes and year one. My experience in nursery has given me lots of ideas that I incorporate in my setting. And my experience in school will help me understand how to get your child ready to start school. Having recently completed the CACHE level 3 I am also qualified to look after children in my own home, and I have just received my OFSTED certificate allowing me to work as a childminder.
