My Requirements

Special Needs Experience

2 x Youth Support Workers Wanted.
Private household - we are not a children’s home or care home.
£13.34ph/ Kettering area.
Both positions are for 2 waking nights per week (and occasional evenings.)

To support a 15 (nearly 16) year old at home or in the community.

They have complex medical and learning needs including ADHD, Autism and overnight CPAP support requiring adult supervision 24hrs a day.

Waking nights are typically 10pm- 8am though this is negotiable. Overnight tasks include monitoring, stock checking, record keeping, administration of medication and oxygen. Light domestic tasks are also expected.

Occasional evenings are needed for our respite as required. A regular Wednesday evening is available from September to support them with social and extracurricular activities.

You would benefit from being autism-aware and thick-skinned. To be gaming, YouTube and APP savvy and able to initiate conversation with young people.

This is not an agency position. The service user is my son and you’d be employed directly by us. We offer guaranteed contracted hours. Our workers must be over 18 due to lone working.

We do not offer sponsorship and a traceable work history in the UK. References will be required and a DBS obtained.

To apply please msg me detailing either your experience or what you think you could bring to our team.

Further information
Re Youth Support Worker. Waking Nights/Evenings.

The night shift involves supporting the young person with his bedtime routine and then monitoring throughout the night. This includes keeping a check on SATs, temperature and respiratory rate. There are some domestic jobs to do overnight to remain awake and alert. There is however a significant amount of time to amuse yourselves, so our workers bring books, devices or study materials in order to stay awake. It is not a sleep-in position. We provide a comfortable space, adequate lighting, use of the kitchen and downstairs generally overnight once the family have gone to bed. The morning involves waking him for the day and administering medication.

The young person breathes through a small tube in his neck called a tracheostomy. Our support workers are trained to monitor this and are able to respond to an emergency should it arise, to ultimately maintain a safe airway. We have trained people from all walks of life and after 15 years, we are safe in the knowledge and experience that nobody needed to have been a nurse beforehand. It would help however not to be squeamish.

The young person needs support 24 hours a day and this includes in the community. He cannot currently go anywhere on his own. He attends various social groups with our support workers. He would like to attend a board games club at Youth Works in Kettering on a Wednesday evening in term time, and I’m hopeful this current recruitment campaign will provide that support as well as the waking night shifts

We are looking for individuals who can bring out the best in our son. He is autistic, quirky and somewhat socially awkward, but he’s kind and responds well surrounded by positivity.
