Special Needs Experience

A great role is available to support an 11-year-old girl once /twice a week. This role will be highly rewarding and an opportunity to make a huge difference to a wonderful young person with complex needs.
C is bright, creative and kind 11-year-old. She lives near Newquay. C loves animals and is talented at sewing, art and Minecraft. C’s education is funded through Cornwall council and she needs a lovely person to help her access activities she enjoys like swimming and Bounce sessions, for example, then/or relaxing at home when tired with Minecraft (no experience in this is necessary!).
C was adopted from care and finds some aspects of life difficult. She has huge strengths, but also difficulties that stem from her earliest experiences such as sensory difficulties and struggles with social communication. C lives with the impact of prenatal trauma and the legacy of early trauma from her first family which means she has complex needs. She needs help accessing activities outside the home and would love to spend time with someone she can share her passions with. You will need access to your own car and be able to drive C.
You’ll able to be emotionally attuned and available; open and empathetic, and you’ll need to be able to recognise your own needs and help your emotions as this can be intense work. C’s mum will work with you to support with this.
Someone kind, emotionally intuitive and positive to build a supportive one-to-one relationship with C at her own pace. Trust takes a long time to develop, so a gentle, calm and consistent approach is essential and a commitment to staying in her life for enough time to build a relationship.
Initially, much time is likely to be spent in our family home getting to know C. Being comfortable with animals is important, as C’s educational package may also involve helping at an animal shelter and we may have our own pet eventually.
This role may suit someone with experience in SEND, care, education or youth work, or someone studying areas such as psychology, education, health and social care or creative arts. But personality, warmth and the ability to build a positive relationship are more important than extensive experience or formal qualifications. There is real opportunity for professional development for those interested in these fields, and training / support will be offered.
Job involves:
· Support with routines
· Activities appropriate for C’s needs such as swimming/soft play
Driving to activities
· Being present for educational activities at home such as online sessions with therapeutic mentor
· Support to deliver therapeutic programs e.g. sensory diets
· Communication with parent to reflect on triggers / anything C has found hard and feedback about sessions
· Annual updates for EHCP review
· Supporting C in basic self-care and carrying out light household tasks such as loading/unloading dishwasher, preparing a sandwich or simple lunch then modelling / encouraging clearing up afterwards

Role Details:
Pay - £15 per hour
• Hours – flexible, building to 8 hours a week but lower initially:
• Expected duration of work: 24 months, hopefully longer
• The vulnerable nature of the young person being supported means it is an occupational requirement for the SSW to be female
The successful applicant will be employed by the family but funded through C’s educational package delivered by Cornwall Council.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All offers of employment will be subject to the successful candidate undertaking an enhanced DBS check. The administration process will be undertaken by Cornwall Council. Rate of Pay: £15 per hour. A travel allowance is provided for any journeys made while transporting her in your vehicle. Public liability insurance is covered.
