My Experience

Employment:

February 2024 - current - live-out nanny to 2 children, B6 and G4.

September 2023 – December 2023 – NQN year, live-in Nanny, shared care for 3 boys aged 20 months, 7 and 9 years old
Throughout the last year I have been working 50+ hour weeks for a family with 3 boys. The role predominantly involves caring for the youngest child - taking him to different groups; planning fun and stimulating activities for him; cooking nutritious meals for all the children and completing associated nanny duties. I have also travelled with this family on numerous occasions, both in the UK and abroad.

April 2018 – September 2023 – Carer, sole charge for a young man with severe disabilities aged 22 years old
I provide all aspects of his care including dressing, feeding and changing him. The role became more regular throughout the pandemic lockdowns when I worked two, 9 hour shifts per week. I love this job and I feel privileged to care for this young man and to support his family with respite care.

April – December 2021 – Live-in Holiday Nanny, shared care for 3 boys aged 9 weeks, 5 and 8 years old
I spent a total of 7 weeks supporting this family with all aspects of the children’s care. I assisted with weaning the baby which enabled me to develop my knowledge of the weaning process by helping to prepare both purees and finger foods. As well as this, to assist the family I occasional prepared and cooked meals for the older children.

April – June 2021 – Norland’s Covid-19 Testing Site Operative
This job involved setting up and cleaning the testing stations; assisting with testing; and logging the students’ results. During this role I had to work quickly and effectively with the team, testing over 40 students every hour.

April – June 2021 – Norland’s Covid-19 Testing Site Operative
This job involved setting up and cleaning the testing stations; assisting with testing; and logging the students’ results. During this role I had to work quickly and effectively with the team, testing over 40 students every hour.

June - September 2020 – Daily Nanny, sole charge for 2 children aged 18 months and 4 years old
This role was for 18 hours a week and included creating healthy, well-balanced meals and snacks for the children. I organised daily activities and outings to keep them entertained and undertook general nanny duties around the home. I was also responsible for giving the toddler his heart condition medication. One of the highlights of this job was successfully potty training the toddler through taking a consistent approach and working collaboratively with the parents.

January 2018 - August 2020 - Daily Nanny, sole charge for 2 children aged 8 and 11 years old
This was a regular babysitting job but during the pandemic I provided additional school and homework help along with organising extracurricular activities for the children. I found this job very rewarding because the family were experiencing personal problems and my being able to provide the children with support and stability during this time was of great comfort to the parents.

May 2018 - August 2019 - Customer Service Advisor with Sainsbury’s Argos
This role involved helping and serving customers; collecting items from the storeroom; and stock taking. I learned about the importance of teamwork and supporting one another when dealing with difficult situations. As I gained in confidence, I was given more responsibility and spent the majority of my shifts in sole charge of the jewellery counter.

January - August 2019 - Nursery Assistant at a private nursery with babies and children from 6 months to 5 years
I was a key worker to a group of pre-school aged children with responsibility for their care; planning age and stage appropriate activities; communicating with parents at drop off and pick up; writing observations; and completing the children’s learning journals at the end of each day.

Childcare Experience Whilst Training

February – March 2022 – Live-in Nanny for 2 children aged 7 months and 2.5 years old
A month-long placement to be undertaken shortly.

September 2021 – Daily Nanny for 2 children aged 5 weeks and 2.5 years old
During this placement I worked alongside the children’s mother carrying out everyday duties including meal preparation; putting together the day bag; and completing the washing and ironing. I found it a very rewarding placement as l supported the mother in teaching the baby to take milk from his bottle. I also gained valuable one-to-one experience with the toddler and felt confident using emotion coaching when dealing with temper tantrums.

June 2021 – Live-in Nanny for twins aged 7 weeks old
It was my first time working with twins and therefore a hugely valuable and joyful experience. I worked alongside their parents but had sole charge for 3 hours every day where I would often take them into London on the train to meet up with other Norland students and their placement charges. I gained lots of experience in making up formula milk safely and bottle feeding the babies.

January 2021 - 4 week virtual placement with 4 children, baby aged 4 months and triplets aged 3 years old
Due to the second national lockdown, this placement was virtual. I was assigned a family and every day I received a written update and film footage detailing the previous day’s events. Using these details and family profile I had to create meal plans and activity planners each week. I carried out regular observations using the film footage and wrote up accident and incident forms when appropriate. This experience gave me the opportunity to practice and gain confidence in completing the essential paperwork required of a nanny.

November 2020 - Maternity Ward Assistant at Royal United Hospital Bath
This week-long placement involved shadowing midwives in their duties and helping new mothers care for their babies. Whilst on this placement, I learned to weigh babies and helped to bottle feed, bathe, top and tail and soothe them. As this placement was during the pandemic, the new mothers were often alone and I spent a lot of time listening to and talking with them. It was one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences I have had whilst studying at Norland.

September and November 2020 - Daily Assistant in a Preparatory School’s Nursery with children aged 2-3 years old
I spent a total of 6 weeks in this setting and my time here was split into two, 3-week long placements. I developed greater knowledge of implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage and worked alongside 3 members of staff looking after twelve, 2-3 year olds. I helped to organise and run activities and provided one-to-one support for several children. During this placement I was also given the opportunity to speak to parents dropping off and collecting their children, which really boosted my confidence.

March – June 2020 – 3 virtual placements
Due to the national lockdown we had three virtual placements and each involved writing up narrative observations from prepared video clips which were then linked to children’s development theories and the Early Years Foundation Stage. For two of these placements, I was assigned a setting: one was a primary school for children with special educational needs and the other a family with two children aged 6 months and 2.5 years old. For these two placements I also had to create weekly meal plans catering for the children’s dietary requirements.

March 2020 - Daily Assistant in a Year 2 class at a primary school
During this placement, I worked alongside the Year 2 teacher in a class of twenty children. During my time here I developed a greater understanding of how the National Curriculum is taught in schools. I also gained experience of forest school activities. Unfortunately, this placement was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

November 2019 - Daily Assistant at a Children’s Centre pre-school class aged 4-5 years old
At this placement I worked alongside 3 members of staff in a class of 25 children. I helped organise and run activities, supervised mealtimes and outdoor play. I found this placement very rewarding and a great learning opportunity as I spent the majority of my time providing one-to-one support to a boy who had autism, increasing my knowledge and awareness of this condition and learning different strategies which may assist me in the future with supporting children in my care.
