About Me

Job Description – Nanny / Carer (After School)
Position
Nanny / Carer (Part-Time)

About the Role
We are seeking a caring, reliable, and experienced nanny/carer to provide dedicated support for our 10-year-old daughter, who is autistic. She thrives with consistency, patience, and a structured, supportive environment. The successful candidate will help promote her independence, wellbeing, confidence, and development while ensuring she enjoys a happy and fulfilling daily routine.
Our family also includes a 14-year-old neurotypical son. While the primary focus of this role is supporting our daughter, the successful candidate should be comfortable working within a busy family environment and, from time to time, provide practical assistance to both children.
The role requires patience, empathy, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to helping children thrive within a warm, supportive family environment.

About Our Daughter
Our daughter is a happy, affectionate, and engaging 10-year-old autistic girl. She has a warm personality, a wonderful sense of humour, and enjoys spending time with people she knows and trusts. She thrives in a calm, predictable environment with clear routines and positive encouragement.
Although she is non-speaking, she is an excellent communicator in her own way and is able to express her wants, needs, preferences, and emotions through alternative methods. We are looking for someone who is patient, observant, and willing to learn and understand her unique communication style.
She continues to develop her independence with the right support and enjoys learning new skills. She is largely independent with her personal hygiene and daily self-care, requiring only occasional prompting or assistance when needed. She responds well to consistency, positive reinforcement, and a calm, reassuring approach.
She attends weekly swimming lessons, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy (OT), all of which support her ongoing development.
Like many autistic children, she can sometimes become overwhelmed by changes to routine or busy environments. A calm, structured approach and an understanding of her individual needs help her feel safe, confident, and able to thrive.
Our goal is to help her continue developing her communication, confidence, life skills, and independence while ensuring she feels safe, happy, understood, and valued.

Key Responsibilities
Collect our 10-year-old daughter from school each afternoon and safely transport her home, providing calm, reassuring support during the journey and helping her transition from school to home.
Prepare nutritious afternoon meals and snacks for both children, taking into account any dietary requirements, preferences, and sensory needs.
Provide dedicated one-to-one support for our daughter, helping her with emotional regulation, communication, daily routines, and developing her independence.
Support homework and educational activities for both children where appropriate.
Transport and accompany our daughter to her regular weekly activities, including swimming lessons, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy (OT), ensuring she arrives prepared, on time, and feels supported throughout.
Plan engaging indoor and outdoor activities suited to our daughter's interests, abilities, and sensory needs.
Encourage positive social interaction, confidence, and life skills through everyday activities.
Encourage a positive relationship between both siblings while recognising that the primary focus of the role is our daughter's care and development.
Maintain open communication with parents regarding the children's wellbeing, daily activities, achievements, and any concerns.
Keep the children's bedrooms, play areas, and belongings tidy and organised, and assist with child-related laundry where required.
Promote a structured and predictable routine that helps our daughter feel safe and secure.
Ensure the safety, wellbeing, dignity, and happiness of both children at all times.

Essential Skills and Experience
Previous experience caring for autistic children or children with additional needs.
Calm, patient, and compassionate approach.
Good understanding of autism and sensory differences.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm and positive in challenging situations.
Reliable, trustworthy, and well organised.
A full, valid UK driving licence is essential. A family car will be provided during working hours for transporting the children to and from school, activities, and appointments.
Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
First Aid certification (or willingness to undertake training).

Desirable Qualifications
Qualification in childcare, education, health, or social care.
Experience with visual schedules, PECS, Makaton, or other augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods.
Training in safeguarding and positive behaviour support.
Experience supporting children with anxiety or emotional regulation.

Personal Qualities
We are looking for someone who is:
Warm, kind, and genuinely enjoys working with children.
Patient, calm, and understanding.
Flexible and adaptable.
Dependable and punctual.
Positive, encouraging, and proactive.
Respectful of our daughter's dignity, individuality, and privacy.
Able to build a trusting relationship with both children and become a valued member of our family's support network.

Working Hours
The usual working hours are Monday to Friday, 13:30 to 19:30.
There may also be an occasional requirement for evening babysitting, for example when the parents have a date night. This will be agreed in advance wherever possible.
Occasional overnight stays may also be requested by mutual agreement. Where an overnight stay is required, active working hours will be paid at the agreed hourly rate. Sleeping hours will be paid at a reduced overnight rate, provided the nanny/carer is not required to provide active care during those hours. Any time spent providing active care overnight will be paid at the standard hourly rate.

Annual Summer Stay in Croatia
Each year, the family relocates to Croatia from approximately mid-July until early September. During this period, the successful candidate will accompany the family and continue providing support for our daughter while enjoying the opportunity to spend the summer on the Croatian coast.
Accommodation will be provided throughout the stay and includes:
A private bedroom
A private bathroom
All reasonable living expenses while travelling with the family
Working hours and time off during this period will be agreed in advance to ensure a good balance between work and personal time.

Annual Leave
The successful candidate will receive annual leave in accordance with their contract and applicable UK employment legislation.
Annual leave must be requested and agreed with the family in advance to ensure continuity of care and appropriate cover for the children.
As a general principle, annual leave should not exceed two consecutive calendar weeks, unless otherwise agreed by the family in exceptional circumstances.
Where possible, annual leave will be coordinated around the family's schedule and travel plans, with reasonable notice given by both parties.

Benefits
Competitive salary, dependent on qualifications and experience
Use of a family car during working hours
Private bedroom and bathroom during the family's annual stay in Croatia
Opportunity to become a valued and trusted member of a warm, supportive family
Ongoing support and open communication with parents

Our Goal
We are looking for someone who wants to build a long-term relationship with our family and become an important part of our daughter's support network. We value kindness, reliability, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping her reach her full potential.
In return, we offer a welcoming and supportive family environment, the opportunity to work closely with two wonderful children, use of a family vehicle during working hours, annual travel to Croatia with private accommodation, and the chance to make a meaningful and lasting difference in our daughter's life.
We hope to find someone who will become a trusted and valued member of our family, helping our daughter continue to grow in confidence, independence, and happiness while supporting a positive and well-organised family routine.
