About Me
Hello, and thank you for visiting our profile.
We’re a friendly family living near Wilson Primary School in Reading, looking for a warm and engaging native English speaker to become a regular reading companion for our two primary-aged children from September 2026.
English is our family’s second language, so one of the greatest gifts we can offer our children is regular time with someone who genuinely loves language, stories and conversation.
We’re not looking for academic tutoring or formal lessons. Instead, we’re hoping to create an environment where reading is something the children genuinely look forward to each week.
Our son will be starting Year 3 and our daughter Year 1 this September. Both are kind, polite and well behaved, and have always received positive comments from their teachers and previous childminders. They enjoy school, love listening to stories and are naturally thoughtful, although they can be a little shy when meeting someone new. We’d love to find someone patient and friendly who enjoys building trust at the children’s own pace.
For us, reading is about much more than learning words. We hope our children will experience the joy of wonderful stories, meaningful conversations, imagination and curiosity. We’d love them to grow up believing that books are places to explore rather than tasks to complete.
We’re looking for someone who can become a familiar and trusted part of our children’s week, someone whose arrival brings excitement because another story is about to begin.
My Requirements
1. Position:
Native English Reading Companion for two primary school children.
2. Start Date:
From September 2026 and for long time.
3. Location:
Sessions will alternate between our home and our local library in Reading.
At the library, we’d love someone to help the children choose books they genuinely enjoy while introducing them to new authors and genres. At home, I’ll usually prepare a suitable book together with a few optional discussion ideas, although you’re very welcome to guide the session in your own natural way.
4. Typical Session:
- Approximately one hour.
- We’re hoping for relaxed, enjoyable sessions that might include:
* reading aloud with expression;
* talking about characters and their choices;
* predicting what might happen next;
* encouraging the children to share their own thoughts;
* asking open-ended questions;
* following their curiosity wherever the conversation leads; and
* occasionally making up silly endings just for fun.
We’re far more interested in meaningful conversations than covering a certain number of pages.
5. Schedule:
* Around one hour per session.
* Flexible days and times by mutual agreement.
* Home sessions can usually be arranged quite flexibly as I work from home.
* Library sessions will generally take place after school.
* Weekend sessions are also possible.
6. We’re looking for someone who:
* is a native English speaker with clear pronunciation;
* genuinely enjoys children’s literature;
* is warm, patient and encouraging;
* understands how to help shy children feel comfortable;
* enjoys conversation more than formal teaching;
* values curiosity and confidence over perfection.
Experience with primary-aged children would be wonderful, and an Enhanced DBS and references would be highly appreciated.
We’ll provide the books for home sessions, along with snacks or small rewards if you’d like to use them as positive encouragement.
If this sounds like a role you’d enjoy, we’d love to hear from you. Please tell us a little about yourself, your experience with children, and perhaps one children’s book you never grow tired of reading.
