My Summary
About Me
I'm a naturally caring person with a calm and gentle approach. I love spending time with children, whether it’s getting creative, exploring the outdoors, or supporting their wild and imaginative ideas. I'm originally from Shetland and now living in Glasgow. Alongside setting up my own business designing lampshades and soft furnishings, I'm looking for part-time childcare work to add some variety, structure and joy to my week.
My Experience
I have over 2 years of experience working with children in various outdoor and creative settings. Most recently I worked as an assistant teacher in a nature school for primary aged children in New Zealand, where I led bush and river exploration, oversaw outdoor learning through risk based play and helped to resolve conflicts. Prior to that I worked in a forest nursery in Glasgow where I loved leading adventures, building dens, helping the children to organise concerts or just chilling out reading books.
I also spent several summers working as a workshop leader at a community arts centre, in Glasgow, where I ran workshops helping the children to design and create costumes, and teaching basic printing and pattern cutting techniques. I also assisted in workshops to design and build a sensory playground with the children. More recently I ran a week long workshop for two groups of children at a youth centre in Shetland, to create giant sea creatures from willow and papier-mâché (around 8 meters long). I very much have an ‘anything is possible’ attitude and through these workshops I hope that I have given the children the self confidence to hold this belief too.
In 2018 I graduated from the Glasgow School of Art where I studied textile design. During my time at GSA I strived to bring play into my creative process as much as possible. In my final year I used children’s drawings as my inspiration for my final creative project to create a collection of knitted masks. I also wrote my dissertation on what we, as adults, can learn from the uninhibited creativity, freedom and diversity expressed in young children’s drawings. I feel due to this I have a unique perspective on the positive impacts of play.
I also have sever years experience working as a chef and so would be more than happy to do any cooking for your family.
My Qualifications
I do not have any formal qualifications, but have a wide variety of experience working with children in outdoor and creative spaces. I have a PVG check and would be happy to register with the Care Inspectorate if needed.
My Availability
My preferred working hours would be 2-3 days per week between 9-5 Monday to Friday, but would be willing to be flexible on this.
