My Experience

As a specialist teaching assistant at Treehouse School, a specialist setting for autistic children, I worked in a pre-formal curriculum class supporting pupils with highly individualised learning programmes. This involved providing targeted one-to-one support to facilitate both academic and social development, implementing structured teaching approaches and using visual supports, communication boards and Makaton to aid understanding and expression. I was actively involved in promoting peer interaction, adapting activities to meet sensory and emotional needs and following behaviour support plans to ensure a safe and positive learning environment. I was also a babysitter for a four year old autistic boy. In this role, I built a nurturing and structured environment, planned activities to promote learning and well-being, and provide consistent emotional support. This also included night support, ensuring the child's comfort, safety and regulation, and adapting to his needs throughout the evening and overnight.
