Hello! My name is Isla, and I am a 19 year old second year student at the University of St Andrews. I am a big sister to two siblings and have been babysitting in conjunction with school and work for around 4 years, for children 2-15.
I am friendly, very hardworking, dependable and connect very well with children in across age groups - I now know a lot about Pokémon and sheep farming from two children!
I am a passionate reader, and have 2 years worth of experience as a ‘Paired Reader’ helping 12-13 years olds develop phonetics and reading skills as they came into high school. I am happy to help with homework at Primary School, and English literacy skills past that.
I house/dog sat for a week for one family, and have pet experience in my own home. My hobbies are music (I have played the piano for 10 years), drawing and cooking which I love.
My Experience
I have babysat/childminded for families in my village on demand for around 4 years as an evenings/after-school sitter. I put children to bed, prepared snacks and meals, read to children and helped with homework so that parents could have more stress-free evenings.
I was also involved in a paired reading program, where for 2 years I helped two 12yr old children practise and develop confidence and reading skills. I was able to develop positive relationships with these children, who had marked improvement in their literacy through working together.
I also was Head Girl in my high school, which meant I led year groups of 13-14 and 15-16yr olds in assemblies and through pupil council sessions, developing good relationships with children younger than me in a professional way.
I have a younger sister (18) and brother (15) and close relationships with both of them - I cook weekly for my family, daily for myself, and have had experience looking after my brother since I was young.
My Qualifications
I have no specific and up to date childcare qualifications.
I achieved 6 As at Higher (English, Geography, Modern Studies, History, Sociology, Art), and A/B at Advanced Higher (Geography, English). I am in the second year of my International Relations MA (Hons) at St Andrews.
I was awarded a Mentor in Violence Prevention certificate in 2024 in my school.
My Availability
My availability is flexible, but I have university obligations that are sometimes unpredictable so my availability will not always be the same - please just ask :) !
I am not yet back at university from Christmas break so do not have my timetable yet - mornings or afternoons may well be available in future.
If you need certain days a week we could most definitely arrange something - the times I have selected are just a general idea of my availability at the moment, and I can make a lot of accommodations if needed.
Unfortunately I cannot drive, so your home would need to be within a 1.5-2 mile walk from the centre of St Andrews (Market St for example), or accessible by public transport that would take me within walking distance of your home.
