My Summary

My Experience

I have had a large amount of experience working with children over the years in a range of roles including volunteer work, teaching, babysitting and being a summer camp counsellor. These positions required me to work with a range of different people from a variety of backgrounds and ages, which I enjoyed.

This summer I spent three months working in a summer camp in America with children aged 7-16 and I had the responsibility of looking after ten children each week. I ensured they were looked after and healthy, including reminding them on medications they needed to take and being a support network for them while they are away from their parents. I taught a range of new skills, assisted in areas such as arts and crafts and action opportunities such as zip lines. I helped the campers become more independent and created a memorable summer for the campers. For this position I also completed First Aid Training and a State Handler Food Course. This job has helped me strengthen my ability to adapt quickly due to the constant chaos of camp life, working well under pressure and remaining positive when approaching every day. Being a counsellor has proved that I am a dedicated employee with a strong work ethic as I was working long and difficult days throughout the summer but I was always pushing to be the best counsellor I could be.

Furthermore, I have volunteered with the UNHCR through my school, working with children aged 5-12 to organise activities and provide new experiences for them. These activities could range from scavenger hunts, to cookie decorating, to arts and crafts, and sports. I would make sure that the equipment had been set up, I would pick the children up from the bus, and I often led the activities. In this position I was able to give the students the opportunity to experience things they might not have had the opportunity to before. This experience taught me the importance of organisation, positivity and clear communication to allow the children to have the best experience possible and in creating a supportive environment.

Additionally, I have done babysitting in the past with kids aged 9-12 and in this position, I would look after the children for extended periods of time where I would participate in activities such as playing with them or cooking them dinner. I also did an internship at a primary school where I helped to teach year groups from Year 1 to Year 6 in a range of academic areas such as maths, spelling, reading and cross curricular. I spent one-on-one time with the students, led reading sessions for the younger students in year 1 and 2, providing support in helping them progress to the next reading level and I helped to run and organise PE lessons for the students in year groups across year one to year six.

I have completed a first aid certification for the American Red Cross in May, as well as a DBS check.
