My Summary

My Experience

Alongside my course, I have recently finished working at Who Cares? Scotland, a children's charity focused on supporting care-experienced young people. My role as an advocate and participation worker involved providing a safe, supportive adult for young people to express their feelings and wishes to. I could then help them feed back what we spoke about to the caregivers and social workers who made decisions about their lives. I truly loved my role at the charity, and the main reason was getting to know the children and young people I was working with. Unfortunately, as the demands of my studies grew, I made the difficult decision to step away from my role so as not to impede on the experience of any young person, however, I would love to return soon.

Importantly, through this work, I hold a PVG membership.

I hope that on that basis, it's clear that I really love working with children. I think they have such rich, imaginative ideas that we can all learn a lot from. I have also previously volunteered in under-resourced nurseries back in Glasgow, as well as undertaken various courses on children's behaviour and psychology (oh, and I have upwards of 30 cousins, many of whom I spent time caring for when they were little), so, I feel like I know not only intuitively but also through theory how best to encourage young people to be the best versions of themselves.
