My Summary
About Me
I am an experienced special needs teacher, passionate, dedicated, patient, empathic, nurturing, organised, flexible and strive to build wonderful relationships with children and the their families. I have worked across mainstream and special education and pride myself on my exemplary practice.
My Experience
I have 30 years of teaching experience across special needs - working with children with Autism and complex communication needs, children with cerebral palsy and and physical challenges, as well as children with epilepsy and high medical needs. I founded a school in South Africa 20 years ago and a mum insisted take her 22 month CP baby so he wouldn’t lose a place! I have extensive experience working with children who have Autism, sensory processing disorder, ARFID, anxiety, pathological demand avoidance, and communication complexities. I have a basic level of training in Makaton, and use PECS and other visual communication techniques in my everyday practice.
I am also a mum to two beautiful girls, aged 20 and 21, and have a special interest in brain development through physical activity… so alongside my degree in Physical Education, I worked with a child and infant physio, both at her private practice and at a baby orphanage, supporting the little ones in reaching their physical milestones in a safe, nurturing and supportive way. That experience was invaluable in raising my own children, preparing their bodies, minds and nervous systems for optimal development and ultimately school readiness.
Over the years, I have worked with children of all ages and with various physical impairments and emotional regulation challenges alongside physios and OTs within many school and private practice multidisciplinary teams.
