My Experience

September 2023- Current: Health Play Specialist, Oxford Children’s Hospital, Oxford
? Prepare children for theatre and procedures in a child-friendly, age-appropriate manner, whilst considering individual and developmental needs.
? Support and distract children through procedures such as stitches, blood tests and drain removals ensuring that their best interests are adhered to.
? Work alongside other professionals in the multidisciplinary team to help the recovery and rehab of patients, liaise about their care and advocate for the children when they need me to.
? Building rapport with children and their families as the friendly, trusting face is the heart of my practice.

? Supported children, young people and their families whilst in a hospital setting.
? Ensured that the environment was safe, child-friendly and inclusive.
? Provided age-appropriate, engaging bedside and playroom play based on individual needs to
encourage development, support their rehab and normalise play to reduce hospital anxiety.
? Supported parents and families to encourage parental wellbeing.
? Have confidence in building positive relationships with the patients, their families and other members of
the multidisciplinary teams.
October 2021- April 2022: Children and Young People’s Play Assistant, Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital, Oxford
? Provided the young patients and adolescents with play/activities whilst they are waiting for their appointment.
? Attended the consultations with the child and their family to support with distraction or keeping the child occupied whilst the parents discussed with the consultant.

? Created many child friendly health promotion posters and displayed these in the playroom which I helped to set up.
? Provided the children on the ward with play/play sessions and supported them throughout local or general anaesthetic procedures.

? Group and 1-1 sessions with an individual supporting both their personal well-being and their academic skills.
? Giving guidance to set themselves goals and continue to lead activities to develop essential skills and encourage them to reach these goals.
February 2014- March 2020: Children’s Activity Instructor (Trampoline Coach), The Park Sport Centre, Oxford
? Coached children aged between 4 years-16 years.
? Led warm-ups and cool downs, watched their skills and gave them advice on how to improve.
? Ensured safety both on the trampoline and off.
? Helped to set up, lead and support children's parties ranging from rollerskating to bouncy castle.
January 2020- February 2020: Student Play Specialist, Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital, Manchester
? Interacted with both the children and parents, giving them extra support when needed.
? Worked effectively as a team with the other Play Specialist/Assistants on the ward to ensure that both the children and their families felt that their time in hospital was as good as it could be in these
circumstances.
? Developed my knowledge regarding the role of a Play Specialist including safeguarding,
communication, confidentiality and distraction techniques.
