About Me
We are looking for afterschool support for our oldest son. We are a busy family of 4 ( mother, father, 2 sons) Our son 12 years old and going into year 8. He is Autistic and dyslexic and at the moment finds the demands of his school day very taxing which in turn is impacting his ability to manage his after-school routine, access activities/ hobbies, personal care, planning and organising himself. He is very clever, with a brilliant memory, and is endlessly curious. He loves baking, board games, a good chat and jokes.
We are looking for someone who will become a trusted part of our family and build a positive relationship with both children. The role is about more than supervision: we want someone who can help our son develop independence and confidence while also making family life run more smoothly.
We value a calm, relaxed and positive approach and are looking for someone who will fit naturally into our family routine.
My Requirements
The role
The role will include:
- Collecting our son from school
- Taking him to activities and encouraging exercise, including going to the gym, walking and generally being active.
- Supervising and supporting homework and school organisation.
- Prompting and supporting personal care and hygiene, including showering, brushing teeth, using deodorant and changing clothes.
- Helping develop practical systems and routines within the home that support both children and the wider family.
- Supporting positive interaction and dynamics between the children.
Supporting emotional regulation using professional advice and strategies.
Working as part of a wider team of professionals, liaising with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and implementing professional advice.
- Communicating with parents about progress, difficulties and anything requiring follow-up.

Ultimately, we are looking for someone who will be a reliable, calm and positive presence in our home: someone our son enjoys spending time with, who can encourage him without putting undue pressure on him, and who will work collaboratively with the whole family to help him become more independent.
Experience and requirements
Experience of working with children or young people with SEND, particularly autism, is essential.
We would particularly value experience of:
- Supporting autistic young people in a home, school, care or community setting.
- Implementing strategies recommended by professionals.
- Developing independence and everyday life skills.
You will also need:
- A full, clean UK driving licence.
- Your own reliable car, which you are willing and insured to use to transport our son to activities.
- An enhanced DBS check, or willingness to obtain one.
- A willingness to undertake training in our son's individual SLT and OT strategies.
Relevant experience, maturity, common sense and personality are more important to us than formal qualifications.
Due to the importance of consistency for our son, annual leave should be taken during normal school holidays and not during term time, except in exceptional circumstances agreed in advance.
