My Summary
About Me
Hi, my name is Clare, I am creative, caring and calm. I am an animal lover and enjoy the outdoors, running and walking with my dogs and gathering images from nature to create art. I have 2 children, although now grown up still keep me on my toes!
My Experience
I started working at the local primary school as a TA when my children began school. I worked from foundation to year 6 and taught art and PE to years 4-6 regularly organising athletics meets and art exhibitions.
I left to work at a PRU for children 13-19 with severe emotional and social needs with challenging behaviours. Although hard work mentally and physically, needing to be creative and patient, it was extremely rewarding and enjoyable. A sense of humour definitely helped at times! I worked with a close team liaising with parents, health professionals and social care, administering medicines and helping the children to access hospital appointments as well as enabling them to develop social skills and academic learning.
I believed that the skills that I used at the PRU would be transferable to working as a prison officer, I was good at de escalation in difficult situations, remaining calm and being able to communicate effectively. I wanted to help rehabilitate inmates and hoped to make a difference. Unfortunately after 18 months of being an officer I found that this was not how the prison service worked!
I began to start my art again, painting, drawing and ceramics but also needed some part time work as well. I began working with a young man with cerebral palsy. This was working within his own home providing personal care and day needs. He is a very sociable lad with a great sense of humour, much of the time we were attending various classes, farm ability, music and art venues as well as going on holiday to Devon. Because of his disability we did daily physio and massage to help with his movement.
I am currently working with a family of 4, both parents disabled with 2 young girls. I have been with them for 3 years, the girls were 6 months and 3 when I began. My position originally was to care primarily for the baby every day and then collect the elder girl from nursery, general housekeeping, shopping, cooking and help with their mother when required. As with many, over the last 2 years my role has changed and adapted and now both girls are at school/ nursery and my hours have reduced. I have loved my position with the family and have grown very close to them all. I am keen to continue my art at home but also would love to continue working within a family environment.
