Private Tutor in Hastings
My Summary
About Me
Hello, and thanks for reading! I am a qualified early years teacher with a Masters degree in education. I have worked with children aged from 0-16 in an educational and developmental support capacity for the past 16 years. Some of the children I have worked with have struggled with schooling/attending an educational setting due to having ASD and/or ADHD.
During my time as a tutor I have worked quite a bit with primary school aged children whose parents want to increase their English and maths levels. Generally speaking, our studies end up being far broader than this, as I tend to follow a very holistic approach. In one case, the student, who was 7, had English as a second language, so much of the focus was on extending his vocabulary. We also did a lot of work on creative writing, building on extending and broadening his written answers. He also needed help with rules of conversation (i.e. having a conversation rather than just talking at someone about a particular interest), projection (understanding other people’s perspectives), and creative and critical thinking skills.
I am currently tutoring an 11 year old girl who has been diagnosed with ASD and ADHD. She was unable to attend school due to emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) and is being home schooled as a result. I am teaching her all primary subjects apart from maths, one day a week.
Another of my recent students had been diagnosed with autism, and possible pathological demand avoidance, although as we built up a strong relationship over time, her symptoms lessened very considerably during our lessons. Initially I was helping her with phonics, aged 5, as she was behind at school. Over the three years that I worked with her, we worked on her reading, writing and numeracy, which were areas she really struggled with. I also focussed on an area where she showed special interest and talent, which was history. In addition, we worked on core areas such as conversation skills, social and emotional development and projection/empathy skills.
I worked for a year with a very bright and talented teenager who was unable to attend school due to her ASD. I was teaching her art and art history. She has now gone on to study an online college art course at GCSE level.
In my work as a nanny, I have been working with a little girl with autism and special needs for 3 years now, from the age of 2, building on her communication, social and emotional/socialisation development, and resilience. Previously I also worked as a nanny to a little boy with autism, from the age of 1-3. He had a communication and language delay and I worked with him a lot on this as well as helping him to develop his play skills.
A little bit of background about me: I began private tutoring in 2010 as an EFL teacher when living in China, teaching English (literature and conversation practice), drama, art and cooking. I started working as a private tutor in the UK after qualifying as an Early Years Teacher and completing my Masters degree. In my spare time I enjoy acting and gardening.
