About Me

Hello! We are Alex (British) and Sharli (Sri Lankan Australian). We are looking for a nanny who can look after our baby daughter Leela, and her 9 year old step-brother James who is with us half the time (every second week). We’re both management consultants who work full time (3 days a week in London and from our home office 2 days a week). We’re keen to find someone who can stay with us for the long term! We’re looking for someone warm, kind and reliable, who is experienced with babies / toddlers and good with older children.

My Requirements

Live Out Nanny

Looking for a kind, reliable and experienced Nanny 50 Hours/Week for a 1 year old girl and a 9 year old boy. We will need nanny support from middle of June 2025 when we both return to work.

Requirements: 50 hours per week (9 days per fortnight with potential for every second Friday off – happy to discuss flexibility re days and hours
• Monday – Friday, 7.15am – 18.30pm – happy to discuss
• Pay is £15-17/hour gross (depending on experience and credentials), plus overtime
• 28 days of holiday, inclusive of public holidays
• Mileage reimbursement
• Modest Christmas bonus
• Live-out

EXPERIENCE
• Experience with babies (c.1 year old+)
• Non-smoker
• Must have driver’s license, own car and be comfortable driving children
• Baby first-aid certification
• Organised, reliable, tidy, kind and able to be firm when needed
• Inclusive and open, caring for mixed race children in a blended household

RESPONSIBILITIES
Looking after Leela full time, and James as well every other week (see “Other information” below). Both children are healthy.

LEELA (1 year old girl, full time care)
Leela is a very sweet and smiley baby who is relatively chilled, comfortable with people and new faces, and increasingly active.
• Feeding (combination of formula bottles and solids 3 times a day)
• Meal preparation (simple, healthy, home cooked meals)
• Food shopping for Leela
• Nappy changing
• Supervising playtime and supporting her development
• Settling down for naps
• Taking to occasional baby classes
• Going for walks in the pram
• Washing and sterilising bottles / feeding equipment
• Bathing Leela on occasion
• Leela’s laundry and other light housekeeping

JAMES (9 year old boy, before and after school care, every second week)
James is a very cheerful and enthusiastic boy who loves drawing, singing, freestyle dancing and reading. He loves his baby sister and spending time with her
• Taking James to school each day (8.40am drop off, 15.15pm collect) - Manland School in Harpenden (c.20 min drive from home, with Leela in the car)
• Provide breakfast (porridge or cereal) and dinner (cooked meals)
• Support with homework (setting him up)
• Taking and collecting to after school clubs either from school, Harpenden or St Albans
• Food shopping for James
• James’ laundry and other light housekeeping
• Keeping toys, craft things and equipment organised (by asking James to tidy up after himself)
• Helping to plan and organise things he may need for school (e.g. sports gear for sports day, school trips etc)
• In school holidays – James typically goes to clubs x3 days per week, x2 days per week he is looked after by his nanny (may also include activities outside, walks, supervising playdates or taking to friends’ houses for playdates on these days).

OTHER ROLE REQUIREMENTS
• Light cleaning particularly of the kitchen and living area (we have a separate cleaner who comes once a week for a thorough clean but we would like the place left reasonably clean at the end of each day)
• Running occasional errands (e.g. post office returns)
• Light shopping as required for children
• Light admin

CONTEXT / OTHER INFORMATION
Sharli is James’ step-mum, and James lives with his mum (Tory) half the time in Redbourn village. Alex and Tory are divorced 7 years, both families have a very good relationship and James moves between homes each Wednesday after school (either his mum collects or the nanny will collect). James and Leela already have a strong bond which is important to us to help nurture. Very occasionally, we may need help taking things of his (e.g. a school book, favourite toy) from one house to the other. We appreciate this aspect of the role is unusual (!) but we have taken a lot of care to make the experience of living across two homes as stable as it can be for James. Both James’ mum and our previous nanny of 2+ years (Lauren) would be very happy to speak to any nanny interested in the role 1-1, to give you their perspectives first-hand before you make any decision.

There is the potential for Alex’s mum Sheila to take care of both children every second Friday which would give the opportunity for the new nanny to potentially have 1 day off every fortnight – for the right candidate, we can be flexible if slightly more / less hours is desired.

Reference from our old nanny...
“Alex and Sharli – thank you so much for being such wonderful and supportive bosses. I don’t think I will ever get bosses like you guys again. You both have definitely set the bar sky high. I have loved my time with you all and in the 2 years and 4 months it’s never felt like work. You have made it so much fun for me and from day dot made me feel welcomed and I have felt so at home. Have loved all of our chats and laughs along the way and will hold such memories!” – Lauren, former nanny for James

A very warm, organised, reliable nanny!

5 stars

Lauren looked after our now 9 year old son (James) for 2 and a bit years from late 2022, she is a wonderful nanny who we would recommend to anyone.

- Lauren is extremely reliable, which was really important to us as we were often going to work. In the whole time with us she was never late once with what was an early start (7.15).
- She was flexible around small changes to timings or the schedule, it always felt like she was working with us to help. As long as the ask was reasonable she would find a way to make it work.
- Lauren was really sensitive and thoughtful about James’ mood as well as all the practical stuff, and would let us know how his day had been, with sometimes a longer conversation about how he was doing more broadly. We both really valued this, particularly as we were parenting James across two homes.
- She listened to the way we wanted to parent James and adapted the same style. There was nothing radical here, but she was consistently respectful in how she spoke around James, was able to be authoritative when it was required (eg getting himself ready in the morning!) but always in a kind way, but could also tell the difference between “naughtiness” and acting up because it had been a long day etc.
- Above everything else, and for me the most important thing, Lauren is a really really kind and positive presence. She was like a ray of sunshine coming into the house each and we genuinely loved having her over. She is so easy to talk to, it felt like having a good friend over who was helping with James. She fit into the home environment seamlessly. Our James is a lovely boy (of course I am hopelessly biased!) but like all children he has his moment of “high spirits” and Lauren never had a cross word for him, she would maintain discipline if it was needed in a really calm and friendly way, she has the most lovely temperament around children and I completely trusted her not just to carry out all the tasks that needed doing but to treat James with respect and affection while doing it, which gave me such peace of mind.

We are very sad indeed that Lauren is leaving us, and whoever she next works for will be lucky to have her!
