About Me

Hii, I am Lakshita, a student at UCL doing her masters in Immersive Storytelling. I have been in London the last 9 months and have loved it here. It’s a new experience for me considering I grew up all my life in India. I have lived away from my home during undergrad, but I can confirm that I am quite homesick and dearly miss my family. We do occasional calls and in most of them, I am babysitting my three and four year old cousins who need me to narrate stories for hours. I especially like creating interactive ones where they feel like they help build the story, like Dora the Explorer maybe.

Anyway, I am working in media and I want to build worlds and create stories for my career. I want to do that with video games, disney theme parks and also regular movies. I like anything that has a story and I’m sure you can tell. Apart from that, I have recently discovered I like to go on runs. I happened to become quite a cook once I moved to London. Give me a recipe and I can make anything at all. And I enjoy doing that, especially since it involves using my hands. I think everyone needs to get off their phones and work with their hands more, make art, do craftwork, draw and colour.

Right now, I am in my final term of Uni and I’m looking for part-time opportunities while I work on my graduate project from home. My schedule has become quite flexible and I am looking to make use of that. I have tried working stints but I recently came across opportunities for being a babysitter/nanny and that seems more of an enriching, happy use of my time. I’d get to tell stories, listen to a lot of new ones and play. Which adult wouldn’t like to get some time in their busy adult lives to play? I’d really love that! So here I am :)

My Experience

I am comfortable looking after children across various age groups. I have looked after toddlers, infants and even teenagers (I finally get what a task I must have been to my mother). In my community, or the apartment I grew up in, I have babysat multiple children aged two to five. My neighbours would usually drop off their toddlers at my place or ask me to come over a few hours when they step out for work or for a date night. I would usually feed meals, keep them engaged throughout, put them to sleep if it was late and ensure the bed time routine was right. I have also cleaned them up, changed clothes, diapers, etc.

I have also, regularly and frequently cared for my three and four year old cousins. With them, I have taken complete responsibility for their care on my own for extended periods. I’d make them food, bathe them, dress them up, manage their food time, ensure they’re hydrated, take them out to a park nearby, go flower-picking and make bracelets together. I’ve also done their bedtime routines and put them to sleep often. I’ve ensured their safety and kept my eye on them at all times.

I also have quite some experience working with children formally during my undergrad where I volunteered at a local church to look after children aged six to sixteen after school, a couple of days a week from 4-6 pm. I supervised them, helped with homework, organised activities and ensured they were in a safe, happy space until their parents came to get them home. That really helped me understand how to sit with different children’s needs, take responsibility for them and model it.

Throughout these experiences, I have come to understand that kids generally are comfortable with me and like me, which is quite important since their trust is essential for us to have a good, safe time together. I believe in keeping them curious, engaged, learning and happy. And I believe I do that without missing a beat.

My Qualifications

I am a postgraduate student at UCL, currently in my final term finishing project work from home.
I have experience taking care of children for years, in my community space, for neighbours and for extended periods for my family. I also have experience in my undergraduate years taking care of children after school at a church, with their homework, organising activities and preparing meals.
