Antonia
Nanny in Plymouth (also available for babysitting)
My Summary
About Me
For the most part my professional experience has been in support work with disabled and neurodiverse teenagers and adults. I am a patient and compassionate individual with a person centred and empathetic approach to care and support. In the last two years I have done a lot of casual nannying for babies and toddlers of family and friends, and would now like to venture into this in a professional capacity, as there are a lot of crossovers between this field and support work. I love the outdoors, especially going to the beach, the moors or pottering in the garden. I am also a creative person and sing in a band. I am naturally playful and find it easy to get on a level with young people.
My Experience
I've been a support worker for 13 years. I've worked with people in their own homes and in the community, in school settings, residential day care centres, and supported people in their work places. I have also been away three times with a family supporting their two twin daughters with muscular dystrophy to access holidays in Thailand and Canada. I currently work as a personal assistant for a partially sighted woman who is a freelance theatre practitioner. This has given me more experience with 4-12 year olds at the numerous drama groups she runs weekly. I have a lot of experience working with young people on the autistic spectrum, as this was my role in a local secondary school for two years. I also worked for ten years with an adult who was on the autistic and adhd spectrum, who also had fragile x syndrome.
I am used to working with individuals who have different modes of communication, need clear instructions and a sense of routine. I am used to thinking of creative ways to manage challenging behaviour and I think these are all easily transferable skills into childcare roles. In the last two years I've been giving adhoc childcare to friends and family in need of nannies. This has really improved my knowledge of early years care and I now feel confident in such skills as helping with meal times, changing nappies and clothes, and generally keeping children entertained in imaginative ways. I have also deepened my understanding of various sensory needs and working through big emotions in young people.
