Childcare Register Training - How to meet the requirements for registration on the Compulsory and Voluntary Childcare Registers

Free Childcare Register Training and Common Core Skills & Knowledge Training for gold members

Prior to the training requirement being removed from the EYFS in January 2024, Ofsted accepted that, when an applicant was registering on all 3 registers, completing a course to register on the Early Years Register also covered any course required to register on the Childcare Register.

This is no longer the case. During the registration process, Ofsted will now ask applicants how they meet the Childcare Register requirements for both the compulsory (ages 5-8 years) and voluntary (8+ years) registers, if the provider has applied to care for older children.

This means that the provider must access training necessary to ensure they have the skills and experience suitable to care for the children. However, the Department for Education have never set out specific requirements for the contents of these courses. During the registration visit, Ofsted will ask applicants how they meet the Childcare Register requirement, ‘The provider provides, or secures the provision of, any training necessary to ensure the person caring for children has the skills and experience suitable to care for the children’.

When assessing an applicant or provider’s suitability to register to care for children on the Childcare Register, Ofsted will focus their questions on whether they have attended / completed training that provides them with the skills and experience to care for later years children - rather than on the name or content of the course.

The requirements, set by the DfE, are here:
