About Us

First Steps in Newquay provides childcare for 93 children aged 0-5 years old. We are a purpose built Nursery on the site of St Columb Minor Academy. The site is very secure with fencing all around and security gates on every entrance. We have our own gated access and have good visual security all around the building. Each classroom has security door entrance system and CCTV is situated throughout the building.

Within our building we have four separate classrooms. Each of our rooms work very closely together and we have excellent systems in place to provide a smooth transition when the children take their next step and move onto their next room. Each of our rooms have easy access toilets within them and are all fully self-contained with kitchens and phone systems.

Each of our classrooms have their own outside gardens which we are constantly developing.

A buggy park allows for safe and dry storage of your prams until it’s time to take your child home.

Sensory Room
We also have a Sensory Room which all children at First Steps have access to. It has been designed using a Black and White theme which has a very calming and soothing effect for young children. The sensory toys and equipment allows children to explore and develop their sensory skills of touch, sight and hearing.

The Caterpillar room is for children aged 0-24 months and is registered for 15 children. Our excellent team of qualified staff will reassure you that you have made the right decision in joining First Steps from the moment you meet them. They will spend time getting to know you and your baby and will ensure that they are able to meet all your needs and follow your routines that you have put in place at home.

We feel it is very important to get to know our parents and learn as much as we can about a child prior to them starting. Home visits are offered by our Early Years Advisor, Harriet Lake, and our settling in process is fully flexible in order to ensure your child’s needs are met.

Each day you will receive feedback on your child’s day from the key person who has the main responsibility for your baby or toddler. We will also give you a ‘home/nursery diary’. This is an excellent way of sharing information about your child’s day with us and for you to note down anything which will help us care for your child during the day. We welcome parents to telephone at any time during the day whilst your child is in Nursery. As parents ourselves, we know how much you miss your child whilst at work. A reassuring phone call can be of great comfort when you are wondering how they are getting along. We also would not hesitate to contact you at any time if we had even the slightest concern about your child. Your child’s safe wellbeing is our highest priority.
Please read our page on the Early Years Foundation Stage to give you a fuller understanding of your child’s development opportunities and how we record their progress.

Children come into our Ladybirds when they reach the age of 2 years and stay with us until they are 3 years old. Our Ladybird room is part of our new extension and has been ergonomically designed and offers a very high quality of age appropriate play equipment and resources. The room is light and spacious and has access directly out onto our new outdoor gardens.

As the children arrive in our room from the Nursery they are very excited and ready for this next step. Our staff have already ensured that each child has had settling sessions and are happy to join their new room.

We provide café snack in the morning and mid afternoon. We promote healthy eating and our snacks are always healthy and nutritious.

Our staff are very passionate and caring about the job that they do, which shows in the everyday running of our nurseries. Without our excellent team of qualified staff we could not achieve the outstanding care that we do on a daily basis.

Please read our page on the Early Years Foundation Stage to give you a fuller understanding of how our planning and observation is implemented.

Our children will move into our Butterfly and Bumblebee rooms when they reach the age of 3 years. When the children reach these new rooms they are now becoming more confident and independent learners and are eager for new and extended learning opportunities and experiences. We have excellent staff who are fully trained and ensure that the needs of every individual child is met.

The children have the freedom to choose activities of their choice and our planning comes from the children. We encourage the children to be as fully involved and engaged as possible with their learning opportunities. You will notice your child grow in confidence the more time that they spend with us.

We put a very important emphasis on our outdoor learning environments and are constantly reviewing and updating our outdoor area. Our aim is to ensure that children are able to experience all areas of learning both indoors and outdoors. (We are currently busy working through a 3 year Action Plan to develop and improve all outdoor areas.)

You will be kept up to date with weekly events through the parents board which is displayed within each of these rooms, emails, blogs.

We keep pets in all our rooms and the children share the responsibility in caring for them. We find this particularly beneficial for children who have difficulty settling when they first join us. Often by bringing the Guinea Pig in a carrot each day, the settling process is made so much easier.

Our Butterfly and Bumblebee children also have many opportunities throughout the year to link with St Columb Minor Academy. One of these links being that they visit the school once a week to use the library and computer suite. This is an invaluable opportunity for the children to prepare themselves for starting school.

We also liase very closely with St Columb Minor Academy to ensure that the children are prepared and excited about starting their new school when they are 4 years old.

Early Years Pupil Premium
