Kelly and kids opened in January 2017. I (Kelly), the director, was previously a childminder and decided to open the nursery due to the high demand of childcare services.
The nursery is registered to enrol 32 children in any one day between our opening hours of 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
The nursery is situated within a local shopping area, in a residential area with many local schools and preschools a short distance away. We also have a children’s centre a short distance from the nursery whim we can signpost parents to should they require additional support. Within the shopping centre, opposite the nursery, is a chemist where we can seek medical advice and signpost parents to should they need advice outside of our field of expertise.
The parents and children are welcomed through a porch where there is a security door, fixed with an electronic, coded door. Staff have the codes and grant access to parents. The first area is dedicated to the before school and afterschool children with resources suited to their age range and ability. The early years children use this area at times when the older children are at school. This space is used for gross motor activities such as bikes and scooters.
Just opposite the entrance is the office, the staff all leave their mobile phones and personal belongings. They sit in here to have their lunch as they are away from the children. This room has recently had a wall erected to provide a safe and secure place to store belongings and to provide parents with an area to speak in confidence with myself or Gill whom is this nursery manager.
At the end of this room, there is a sleep room where the younger children sleep and rest throughout the day. The sleepers are monitored and ten-minute checks are logged on the form just outside the room. The room is also equipped with a sleep monitor for extra security.
Just passed the sleep room is a kitchen. This room is used for mealtimes where all children sit together and eat their meals. The parents provide all food and we provide snacks.
As you walk through the kitchen, you enter the restroom area. We have a disabled toilet for staff use and just opposite and to the right, there is a changing facility and children’s toilets.
As you come out of the kitchen and turn left, you enter the main play area for early years. The large room is divided into areas to ensure the children have access to learning opportunities that cover the seven areas of learning and build on their characteristics of effective learning. These areas include a role play area, loose parts area, messy play area, under 2s area, and a comfortable reading/quiet space area equipped with cushions and comfortable seating for children who may need time to rest.
Our setting is wheelchair friendly as each room has wide doorways and even flooring which also lead into a disabled toilet.
We do not have a dedicated outdoor space, however, we have recently had some short fences made enabling the children to play outside the nursery at times where they are fully supervised and enjoying the fresh air as we engage in messy play experiences and tend to our small natural garden beside our entrance way. We have many parks and green areas a short walk away.
