Hi, I'm Michelle. I'm an Governess and Trainee Teacher.
Combining my speciality in the Arts with my interest in Educational Neuroscience, I aim to create an environment for my charges where they can confidently and creatively develop their individuality and strengths.
I believe in raising children to be kind and considerate individuals and I very much believe that children deserve to be treated with as much respect as we ask of them. The role that creativity has in helping children to explore and express their sense of self and develop their emotional breadth and security is of great interest to me.
I have a great deal of experience in SEN (particularly ADHD and ASD). I am empathetic toward the unique situation that each family is in, and as such, I am more than happy to tailor my approach to the individual child.
In terms of care, I prefer to take a gentle approach, whilst maintaining firm but fair expectations on manners and behaviour, as research shows that children learn and develop best when supported through their difficulties. However, I do believe that children are intelligent, and are capable of independent problem-solving when provided with the correct tools and support. Further, I do not follow one specific style but instead prefer to borrow aspects from parenting styles such as RIE, and pedagogies such as Montessori and Steiner-Waldorf.
I am Ofsted 12 Hour Compliant Paediatric First Aid trained, Enhanced DBS checked and insured. I am a British Citizen and native English speaker, with Afrikaans as my second mother tongue (beginner/intermediate). I am also currently learning Dutch, German, French and BSL (beginner).
I have experience in caring for children with specific dietary needs, such as those who are vegan or abstain from certain foods due to allergies. In fact, as a proficient plant-based cook, I am often asked to teach my charges how to cook without the use of meat, eggs or dairy, as it provides children an opportunity to create wholesome, nutritious and creative meals that are packed with veggies!
I am also very pet friendly and am happy to provide medications (including SUB-Q).
Thank you for reading.
Have a great day! :-)
I have worked in private households as a Governess/Nanny/Housekeeper, and in EYFS settings as a Childminding Assistant. I have also worked in the arts, technology (web design) and animal rescue.
I am currently a Trainee Teacher. Once I have completed my initial qualification, I shall undertake the QTLS, which is the post 16 equivalent of the QTS. This will enable me to teach as a qualified teacher across Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education. I also hold CPD in Education.
FT/PT from September 2019 onward.
