My name is Victoria Firth and I have been an independent childminder for the past year. For 4 years prior to starting my own business, I was a childminder's assistant, also located in Wetherby, where I live.
I provide a warm welcoming, friendly and fun home environment, where every child is treated as an individual and is encouraged to delvleop at their own pace, to become confident and independent.
My home has been inspected and certfied for safety by Ofsted, and with their guidance I have installed a number of safety precautions. These include safety gates, fire guards, corner cushions, cupboard locks & safety film on the windows. We have a large garden which we use for outdoor activities in good weather, along with 2 good sized rooms within the home, for indoor crafts and general play.
During my 2 year Diploma I went on regular placements in various schools, nurseries and other independent child minding businesses. This gave me a great introduction and vocational experience in all the different aspects of child minding. During these placements I chose my locations specifically so each one showed me a different aspect to child minding each time.
I came out of my course with a clear aim that independent child minding was the right choice for me. I found it more personal and ultimately more productive for both myself and the children. The relationship with a child is one of the most important aspects of my business and I strongly feel the home environment is the best to accomplish this.
The last 4 years has given me the opportunity to not only do the day to day routines such as school runs, feeding & toilet training, but I have also been responsible for the children’s Thematic Planning such as winter, all about me, transport which encompasses the 6 learning outcomes of the foundation stage curriculum. I found this extremely beneficial to not only the children but also to the parents. The planned activities we carried out included number & letter work, painting, drawing, themed days, dancing and making gifts. The parents really appreciated these activities as they realised that not only were their children being stimulated with a regular timetable of tasks and activities but that there was an underlying curriculum program we were working to.
All the children are encouraged to get involved in these tasks, and over the summer holidays I also helped plan activities for the older children as well.
