About Me

Hi there.
I'm Sam. I'm 32 and have lived in Canterbury for the last 12 twelve years. I originally came here to study at the University of Kent and loved the area so much that I've stayed put!
I've been working with children and teenagers for the last 11 years. I was an activity leader at one of the local language schools during my time at university. I then taught English as a foreign language before completing my PGCE in Primary Education. I have been a teacher for the last 6 years, I progressed to senior leadership 2 years ago where I managed Key Stage 1 and was the Maths leader. I am extremely passionate about primary maths and am an expert in current maths teaching techniques, ensuring children have a deep understanding and are able to apply reasoning to what they are doing. I am experienced at phonics teaching and raised the outcomes of the school phonics screening significantly as well as improving the KS1 SAT results. Whilst academic achievement is important it is certainly not the be all and end all and my classroom was always a happy and exciting environment to be in.
I love my job and the best part of it is getting to know the children I teach, building strong relationships with them and getting them excited about learning about the world around them. My lessons will often go on tangents based on the children's interests because their curiosity is so worth nurturing. I'm passionate about children's reading and sharing stories is something I love.
I'm an extremely patient person, always taking time to listen and talk to children about their feelings and making sure they feel safe and happy in all situations. I have worked with children with a wide range of SEN needs and currently work solely with children with emotional, social and behavioural needs.
I have a lot of energy and love engaging children's imaginations and playing along with their ideas.
I will have total respect for your household and your rules. I can be trusted to uphold your routines and boundaries and ensure your children both have fun and feel safe and secure. I'd love to meet you and your little people to see if we are the right fit for each other.

My Experience

I have been teaching in a primary school for the past 6 years, I have mostly been in Years 1 and 2 but as part of my management duties I taught and ran extra circular activities throughout the school. I progressed to senior leadership 2 years ago where I managed Key Stage 1 and was the Maths leader.

I am a keen musican and have run the choir and recorder clubs as well as yoga and mindfulness activities for children. I am a keen cook and spent time developing children's cooking skills and nutritional knowledge.
I currently work as a part-time primary teacher teaching children age 7-11 in a Social, Emotional Behavioural school.
I taught English as a foreign language to children aged 5-16 for 2 years. Prior to this I worked as an activity organiser at the same language school, organising trips and in house activities such as arts and crafts and sports games.
