About Me

Hello, my name is Louise, I am 34 years old and living in the North Finchley area.
I have always enjoyed working with children and have wanted to teach from a very young age, I went in to tutoring for the experience, both classroom experience and how to set and understand the work.
Tutoring has taught me numerous things in relation to children and education.
I have been tutoring for 13 years, teaching English and maths to primary school aged children, I have tutored children from 3 years old to 11 years old. In this time, I have also tutored for 11 plus exams, including verbal and non- verbal, maths and English.

My Experience

After my tutoring session I like set the children a small amount of homework, this is to help solidify the learning of the child.

During my time tutoring many of my previous students have gone on to achieve high SATs results and past their 11 plus exams and attend popular secondary schools, such as Queen Elizabeth Boys, Dame Alice Owen and non- entrance exam school Queen Elizabeth Girls.

I like to make the lessons tailored to the individual child as much as possible, meeting their individual needs and goals, I have learnt that some areas take a longer time to fully grasp and understand so I tend not to rush over these subjects.

Learning their time tables and be able to write creatively are two of the main areas I feel that children should be able to achieve before the end of primary school.

As well as tutoring primary school aged children I have also tutored a number of adults, some wanted to improve their everyday English both spoken and written, and others wanted a bit of extra help in passing the standard English tests.

My Qualifications

I am recently completed my degree course at London Metropolitan university in Holloway, where I undertook a course to become a teacher.

Whilst at university I have visited various schools and observed how different children work in different settings (e.g. the differences between working in a library to their normal classroom) and the differences between schools located in different areas.

As well as tutoring and university, I have also worked in a 1 form entry faith primary school. This is the third primary school I have worked in. I had been at this school for 6 years, working across years 1 to 6, as well as my usual TA duties I have been given many opportunities to cover classes if a teacher is unavailable.

I have conducted lessons alone and with the help of another teaching assistant. I have experience working with a full class, managing different abilities and personalities and working in smaller groups, of children with similar needs and abilities.

At work I was responsible for a small invention group, this group can differ from academic year to year, last year my intervention group was solely year 6 and was focused the SATs, I worked with the children who needs a boost in their SATs and also the children who were exceeding in their work. My current intervention group requires me to bridge the gaps in their learning and to set their work appropriately.

Working in these groups has given me the opportunity to work closely with children and to understand their needs and requirements, as it allows me to spend more time and to focus on a smaller number of children.

I am currently working at an occupational therapist assistant in a private prep school in Marble Arch. This has given me an insight into how to help and encourage a child when they something that they find tricky.
