Yellow Wellies in Durham nursery is an established day care facility in the heart of Durham City, with easy access to the A690 and easy walking distance to the train and bus stations. We have 57 places for children from 6 weeks to 8 years old.
Who we are
The nursery is one of three in a small, family-owned chain of nurseries, owned and led by Kate Jones, Director of Early Years. Kate is qualified to Early Years Professional Status (which is a post-graduate level qualification the equivalent to a qualified teacher in early Years) and is currently studying Education as Masters level. Kate takes the quality of the nursery very seriously, encouraging her very experienced team to further their knowledge and qualifications whenever possible. Currently 6 of the team of 12 have a relevant degree or higher, with one being a qualified teacher. However, qualifications aren’t everything - between us, we have an average of 7 years’ post-qualification experience and we have 16 children of our own. Additionally, we are very good at retaining our team, with an average of 8 years service in this nursery. All of which are good indicators to a high-quality provision (EPPE Report).
Established in 1997, we have a wealth of experience of providing the highest possible standard of care for our children, which is reflected in excellent Ofsted reports. In January 2008 we relocated to a fantastic building with its Edwardian splendour, fabulous natural light and its own woodland, to give our children the best possible environment to enjoy their learning with us and their friends whilst having lots of fun!
Our approach to childcare and education
Children’s early experiences are important stepping stones in preparing them as secure and confident individuals for school. At Yellow Wellies your child will be supported and guided in their development by the wonderful, dedicated team. We are committed to ensuring that your child is given every opportunity to explore and learn from their surroundings, from their peers and from the considerate teachers in the most enjoyable way. This includes inside the nursery, outdoors at the nursery in our Brambley Wood and in the allotment and outside for walks and trips. From young babies to 5 year olds, we use a wealth of resources and opportunities, supported by caring adults to help your child to discover the wonders of the world, to develop physically, to develop friendships and social skills and to develop a positive attitude to learning.
All children are different. We at Yellow Wellies are well prepared and equipped to make the most of your child’s individuality, by encouraging each child to reach his or her full potential through a stimulating program of events. We offer parents a sense of freedom, secure in the knowledge that their child will be well looked after in warm and welcoming surroundings.
Monitoring your child’s progress
We have invested a lot of time and resources researching and developing our own method of recording the observations we make on each child. Every day that your child is with us we observe them individually, as part of a group, in child-led and in adult-led activities – with particular emphasis on social development, physical development, cognitive development (understanding) and speech and language development. These observations help the team to extend your child’s learning by responding to what your child’s interests are not only generally but on that day at that time. This secures your child’s interest and makes their learning appropriate and valuable to them as an individual.
True partnership with parents
Just as importantly, we work closely with our parents, making important decisions together and discussing your child’s development as a team. We are able to provide help and support in encouraging and supporting your child’s learning at home and we welcome your knowledge and experiences to help us to do that at nursery. For example we have created an indoor beach, as a result of a child’s weekend visit to the beach. That child and the other children were able to re-live their recent experience, to help them make sense of what they had seen, heard, smelled, felt and tasted (sand really doesn’t taste very nice at all!!). We carry out termly assessments of your child’s developmental progress WITH you (we don’t just tell you what we know – it is essential that we work together) ensuring that together we have a holistic picture of your child, how they are doing, what we can all do to help them with their next stage of learning and development, what their interests are, how their confidence is and a general update on their progress.
