My name is Kim Barnetson, I have been a Registered Childminder for 18 years.
I live with my husband, our youngest daughter (aged 18) and one cat, in the NEW TOWN area of Colchester. (we have two adult children who no longer live at home and one baby grandaughter) I live in a four bedroomed terraced house , the ground floor is used for childminding. I have a fully enclosed garden full of interesting play equipment such as a climbing frame, wooden play house, mud pit, mud kitchen, sand and water play and lots of ride on toys and prams. I have a comfortable, fully heated conservatory which we use as a play room.
As well as a home full of toys books and fun, we also spend lots of time outside at the park, in the woods at the museum or library. We attend several groups each month such as Squidge art group, Story time in the Forest, and toddler groups and we also try to attend a few school events each term such as harvest festival or spring fairs, these help young children to begin to understand the idea of school and be familiar with it as well as getting to know the older children. We visit a residential home for the elderly twice a month and have our own gardening plot at the Community garden on the Recreation ground.
I provide all meals and snacks inclusive in my hourly rate, for children who are fully funded I ask for a voluntary contribution towards food, outings and resources as sadly the funding rate is lower than my regular rate and the Government class food, outings and resources as "extras".
From September 2019 I will be working with an assistant, Janine is an experienced childcare provider who has a level three qualification in childcare as well as current safeguarding and paediatric first aid qualifications. Working together we will be able to provide more one to one care for the children in my setting and provide some additional spaces.
My youngest daughter , Ruth is DBS checked and loves spending time with the young children and often takes on pet feeding responsibilities for minded families when they are on holiday. Ruth is also available for babysitting.
I am in the sixth year of a Child Psychology/Childhood studies degree, I also hold a level 5 and level 4 qualification in Child Psychology and a level 3 in Childcare. I am DBS checked and hold current paediatric first aid and safeguarding qualifications. A full list of my qualifications and courses I have attended can be seen on my website.
I believe that children deserve the best possible care and like to think of my setting as an extended family. All of the children and parents know each other and often lasting friendships are made among us all. We love getting visits from ex-mindies who come back to see us.
Whilst your children are in my care I treat them as I would expect my own children to be treated, with kindness, lots of cuddles , the chance to learn through play and also real life experiences such as cooking , visiting the library or going on the train to the seaside. I want children to feel at home here and that means playing with the toys of their choice , taking part in activities such as setting the table or just chilling out. Unless weather conditions are extreme, I encourage free flow play between the house and garden. I value each child as an individual and enjoy hearing about their achievements at home , in my setting your child is seen as an individual and not just "one of the crowd". I plan activities and experiences to suit each child's interests
I follow the Government Guidelines for children aged 0-5, the EYFS. I also use an online administration system called babysdays, this fantastic system means that parents are able to interact daily with their child's achievements, through pictures, videos, observations and diaries. I believe that childcare providers are enablers, we plan activities and outings around the children's interests.
My setting works closely with the Early Years degree faculty at the University of Essex/Colchester Insitute and we often welcome student placements. Recently we took part in a research project aimed at supporting children's critical thinking skills.
I am active community member and have organised a Jubilee Street party, and help each year with the New Town Community day. Working with my neighbours I helped to set up the first "Playing Out" scheme in Essex. For the last seven years we have taken part in New Town Open Gardens where we invite visitors to see what a Childcare setting is like .Over the years I have run several groups for parents and children and now run an online support group for local Childminders as well as a general Community group.
The beauty of Childminding is that your child gets to be part of their community too, we take part in the school sports day, say hello to the postman and wave to the neighbours walking their dogs in the park every day.
I pride myself in going the extra mile to support the families I work with !
I have been a Registered Childminder for eighteen years and have been graded as OUTSTANDING by Ofsted THREE times at my last inspections in 2016, 2010 and in 2007. You can view my latest Ofsted report online at my website. Over the years I have cared for children from many different backgrounds and cultures. I have also cared for children with special needs . I enjoy welcoming children into our home and aim to provide the next best thing to being in their own homes. Quotes from past and present families can be viewed on my website. I work to the Ofsted guidelines for young children (The Revised Early Years Foundation Stage) and use my experience and training to provide a wide range of experiences and activities tailored to your child's needs to ensure they develop the skills needed for school and later life.
I hold a level five Child Psychology qualification and a second level four Child Psychology and Counselling qualification. I also hold a level three childcare qualification, current first aid , safeguarding and food hygiene qualifications among others.
In November 2015 I was awarded the Essex Early Education Award after being nominated by the families I work with and other professionals.
I am currently studying for a Child Psychology/Childhood studies degree with the Open University.
I am qualified to provide funded nursery education for children aged 3 and 4 years (this is 15 hours per week of free funded childcare which can be increased to 30 hours if parents meet the Governments financial criteria) and in some situations funding is also available to children aged 2. I attend several courses and workshops each year for example, Forest schools, heuristic or enabling environments and work hard to keep up with current thinking in childcare.
I am the only childminder in Colchester to have implemented the ECAT (Every child a talker) scheme which is a groundbreaking scheme in Essex promoting early communication skills. I was also involved with the follow up scheme called "TLC" talk listen cuddle.
Recently my setting was chosen as an example of how to provide outdoor play experiences by our local childrens centre teacher and we have had visits from childcare experts from Sweden.
My setting was also selected to feature in a DVD made by the Essex early years department, about quality childcare. The DVD is used to promote quality childcare and encourage people to consider becoming childcare providers.
During Summer 2017 our setting participated in a research project with the University of Essex studying the educational value of Forest schools.

- Childminding from £4.80 per hour
My Fees are ALL INCLUSIVE I provide all food apart from formula milk and am happy to provide home made baby food too. Parents only need to provide nappies, spare clothes and formula milk.
My hourly rate starts from £4.80 for full day care, I am happy to accommodate term time only contracts. Please contact me details of my invoicing system.
After school care for older children is charged at session rates (3.15-5.00 £14.00, 3.15-5.30 £16.00)
I am registered with several voucher companies which helps parents reduce their childcare costs. All three and four year old children are eligible for 15 hours per week during term time of funded care, this is available for some two years olds who meet certain criteria.
Some parents, who meet the Governments financial criteria are able to claim an extra 15 hours of funded care per week during term time. As this funding is at a lower rate than currently offered to childcare providers, parents who access funded hours will incur a small day charge of £5 to cover all food, toiletries, crafts, groups and outings. (This charge is voluntary, parents can choose to provide their own food and arrange for alternative care during our daily outings)

- I provide drop offs and pick ups at Kendall Church of England Primary School
