About Me

Hello! My name is Rosie and I'm a medical student living and studying in Central-East London. Before my medical degree, I graduated with First Class Honours in French, Spanish and Portuguese (BA) from the University of Cambridge in June 2017, and then worked as a senior writer for an educational website and a healthcare support worker for the NHS.

I have tutored children/young people in a wide range of academic subjects up to A level standard (degree standard for French and Spanish), and have looked after children of nearly all ages (see 'My Experience' for more details on both these things!). I speak French, Spanish and conversational Portuguese, and am very comfortable in multilingual, multicultural environments. I can cook and clean competently, love pets, and am happy to travel to where your family is based to look after or tutor them, provided you live within reasonable public-transport distance of Tower Hamlets/the City.

Since I was old enough to work, I've gravitated towards either teaching or caring for children. I find it fulfilling spending time with and nurturing inquisitive minds, and there's something so satisfying in tailoring the way I interact with a young person to their individual quirks in order to bring out the best in them!

Please don't hesitate to message me for more information.

My Experience

TUTORING EXPERIENCE

Maths:
*June-July 2015:
I worked as a summer Teaching Assistant 2 hours per week in 'Abacus x Maths Learning' maths enrichment courses ran for parents and children aged 4-11 years old. This included learning the Abacus Maths method for addition, subtraction, long multiplication and long division and subsequently helping children with learning this method, and also helping children with general arithmetic and problem solving maths questions.

French/Spanish/Portuguese:

*Sept 2017-Jan 2018:

I tutored a year 11 student in Spanish to prepare for their GCSE oral exam, planning out example answers to various questions each week and going over relevant grammar/vocabulary in an interesting and engaging way. The student expressed that they felt far more prepared for the oral and for the GCSE Spanish exams in general at the end of our time together.

I tutored a year 9 student in French and Spanish to nurture her growing interest in the languages, going through various grammar and vocabulary via interesting and useful topics. This culminated in the student’s decision to continue studying French and Spanish when she begins her GCSE studies next year!

I tutored a year 8 student in French and Spanish whose parents were native French/Spanish speakers, so as to improve the student’s confidence with speaking and begin teaching them the official grammar needed to write well and have success as GCSE. The parents noted a marked difference in the student’s willingness to interact with them in French and Spanish, and her writing was significantly improved!

*July-Sept 2017:
I conducted Spanish lessons for 2-year-old and 4-year-old siblings over the summer to introduce them to the language via interactive and fun games.

*November 2017:
I conducted 4 hour-long lessons for classes of 25-30 year 7 students in beginners’ Portuguese as part of a learning enrichment day set up by their school. I included basic introductions, numbers, cultural activities, and fun easy-to-digest information about the Portuguese-speaking world, and received excellent feedback from staff and students alike.

*Sept 2012-June 2013:
I tutored 4 GCSE students in French throughout the academic year in weekly hour-long lessons. This involved using activities and exercises from exam-board approved workbooks as well as creating my own supplementary activities to help boost their general grammar and vocabulary. I was delighted that all 4 students went on to attain their target grades (A, A, A, B).

*Jan-April 2016:
I tutored a 9 year-old girl in basic French for 4 months before going abroad for my degree - this was not tailored to passing exams or tests, and was simply set up to nurture her growing interest for the language through choosing fun and useful topics, creating colourful vocabulary and grammar sheets with pictures that she could easily refer back to, and plenty of role-play and other speaking exercises/games!

EFL (English as a Foreign Language):

*July-Aug 2018:
I taught full-time at Primary and Secondary schools around Hong Kong for 6 weeks, and received wholly positive feedback from observing teachers and TAs from all schools I worked in.

*Sept 2017-Jan 2018:
I tutored a 15-year-old French boy via Skype to help him with conversational fluency and confidence. This involved choosing a different topic each week and asking questions surrounding it, and at the end of each session running through mistakes and going over any grammar or vocabulary necessary via a live document. The student improved steadily over the time period and achieved higher grades in English at his school in Paris as a result.

*Aug 2014:
I tutored a 12-year-old Spanish girl for a month at her home in northern Spain, giving her English lessons for an hour and a half a day in order to improve her speaking, writing and listening comprehension. The parents were highly impressed with her progress and she therefore came to spend 4 weeks at my home in St Albans in turn in June 2015, and again in September 2016, to further improve her English in a totally immersive environment under my instruction.

Maths and English:

*June-Aug 2013:
I tutored a 6 year old in KS1/2 English and Maths during the summer holidays to prepare her for the forthcoming academic year. This involved inventing interactive, fun activities so as to keep her entertained while reading, practising times tables, maths problems, spelling and handwriting.

KEY CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE

*2010-12:
I worked at Jousters after-school and before-school children's club at Wheatfields' Infant and Junior School, as well as occasionally at Oakwood Infant and Junior School, for 2 years as a play worker. I looked after, entertained and helped with the homework of around 20-30 children of 4-11 years old for 3 hours after school and 1.5 hours before school. I led sports activities, prepared light meals and acted as a friendly but authoritative role model for the children.

*Jan-Sept 2013:
I babysat 3 children before going to university, one of whom was 7 months old when I began, for 7 hours (5pm-midnight) a week. I cooked them dinner, played games, helped with homework and took them for trips out to local parks, as well as carrying out everything necessary to care for a small infant (changing nappies, sterilising bottles correctly, feeding, putting down, using a baby monitor and managing any nighttime wake-ups). I still babysit for this lovely family on an ad-hoc basis, getting the youngest ready for bed (bath, brushing teeth etc), playing, doing light housework for the family (dishwasher, washing up, general tidy-up), picking up and dropping off the youngest up from nursery, and generally ensuring the happiness and safety of all 3!

*2013-14:
I frequently child-minded a 7-year-old girl during my university holidays, cooking meals, playing and helping with homework.

*Sept 2015 - Jan 2016:
I cared for a 5-year-old boy twice a week, bringing him home a short walk from school, both practising school activities (reading, handwriting) with him as well as keeping him entertained (trips to the local park, baking, drawing, playing) and cooking his evening meals. I still babysit this little boy in the evenings on an ad-hoc basis, settling him and reading stories before bed.

*Sept 2015 - March 2016:
I cared for a 4-year-old boy 2-3 times a week, walking him home from school, preparing a light evening meal, getting him ready for bed, playing and reading stories - the usual!

*July 2017-Jan 2018:
I regularly babysat for various families every week, filling in on an ad-hoc basis wherever needed and carrying out the usual activities!

I have regularly babysat for many of these families on an ad-hoc basis around other commitments in the last few years, and have babysat for new families on an ad-hoc basis since starting my medical school studies in London.

Rosie is fantastic with young kids and is a very kind, gentle, caring and warm individual. She has a sunny and friendly personality and seems to have that knack of getting on with kids.

She worked with our son for six months in 2015/2016; he was always very happy to spend time with her and was alway very happy in her company. The assignment only came to an end because of Rosie's college commitments at the time (which I believe have now concluded), but we've stayed in touch and still work with her from time to time.

Needless to say, our son is always very pleased when we get Rosie along for an evening of childminding!
