About Us

Options Barton provides a holistic service to children and young people with autistic spectrum conditions and associated complex needs. Our bespoke, person centred service can cater for stays of between 1 night and 52 weeks per year and can offer day or residential education placements either via our main school or our specialist unit The Bridge@Barton.
Options Barton is an independent day special school offering an adapted and differentiated national curriculum for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 pupils, and a vocational-based curriculum in our sixth form for post-16 students. Education is delivered via the main school and also The Bridge @ Barton, a specialist unit for children and young people aged 8 to 19 years with high functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
The teaching frameworks at Options Barton have been specifically designed for children and young people with special educational needs and follow an autism specific approach. We use a wide range of approaches, which are individually adapted to the needs of each student, placing particular emphasis on supporting the development of communication skills with visual strategies and high and low tech communication aids. Generally, these approaches emphasise the need for structure while considering environmental and sensory factors, with the aim of minimising anxiety and distraction.
Behaviour support programmes are delivered alongside the students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP); these programmes encompass the individual behaviour support strategies and targets. The students’ key workers, teachers, therapists and families are invited to contribute to these at strategy meetings.
