About Me

My name is Gemma, and I bring over a decade of diverse experience supporting children and young people across education, childcare, the care sector, and the creative arts. Although I do not hold a formal childcare qualification, I have completed extensive professional training— including SCQF Level 8 Counselling Skills and TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health. I am also up-to-date with all my training certificates including safeguarding, first aid, Food Safety and Hygiene, plus specialised learning in positive behaviour support, equality and diversity. These not only strengthen my practice but allow me to offer an emotionally attuned, safe, and professional standard of care.

Throughout my career, I have supported children from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, as well as those with additional needs—including autism, learning difficulties, mental health challenges, and physical disabilities. I currently work as a SEND Teaching Assistant, supporting neurodiverse children, and I have previously worked in residential childcare, early years settings, international schools, youth work, community arts, and family wellbeing roles. This gives me a 360-degree understanding of children’s needs, communication styles, emotional worlds, and behavioural support.

Originally from the Channel Islands, I grew up in a community that celebrated diversity, creativity, and outdoor living. These values still shape who I am today. I am well-spoken, well-travelled, and passionate about learning, people, and meaningful work. Creativity is a huge part of what I offer—whether through imaginative play, drama and storytelling, crafts, music, or helping children learn through curiosity and exploration.

I live in Stevenston and am happy to travel throughout Ayrshire depending on the number of hours required.

My approach to childcare:
I believe in creating a warm, fun, and structured environment where children feel safe, seen, and encouraged to grow. I combine creativity with clear boundaries, building routines that support confidence and emotional regulation. Outdoor play, educational activities, and gentle holistic practices (such as mindfulness and emotional communication skills) often feature in my work where appropriate.

I am known for building strong, trusting relationships with children and young people—particularly those who may need extra patience, understanding, or emotional support. With a mindful and holistic approach, I strive to create a positive space where every child feels valued and supported.
